Marine Pollution Program to close!

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

Canada’s Marine Pollution Program is closing.  Why? Canada has been sending letters to government Scientists stating the closing of the program.  What will the loss of jobs will do for the scientists and their families.

Why is Canada eliminating such a great program?  Though there are no definite answers that I can find at this point, I am sure the staff of the Marine Pollution Program is seeking and demanding answers.  Even the top scientists have the right to know why their job will be lost effective April 1st, 2013.  I believe they still have plenty of time to petition this decision and only hope that this program can remain up and running.

Currently, Canada’s Marine Pollution Program employs 75 staff.  To get more details on what is going on with this program and the government’s decision to shut it down, you can visit enn.com.

What do you think of Canada’s Marine Pollution program closing?  Do you think they need this program or do you think it will save the goverment money if they close it completely?  Please share you thoughts and opinions on this topic.

Can you really lose weight while you sleep?

Monday, May 21st, 2012

Apparently, this isn’t a hoax! You can lose weight while you sleep!  Wow, really?  According to enn.com, “sleeping more could keep the flab away.”  Sounds easy doesn’t it?  Does that mean we don’t have to exercise anymore?  As brown-nosed as it sounds I am a fan of exercise and keeping our bodies fit and free from sicknesses.  While sleep is one of the components to make it possible, I am not sure that sleep alone is as effective as working out 3-5 times a week.

The study shows that our “sleep-wake cycles show disruptions to the clock may be linked to metabolic disorders such as obesity and type-2 Diabetes.  Sleeping 8 hours a night and eating during the day is a definite way to regulate weight etc.  If you are interested in learning more about this study, you can view the complete article over at nocamels.com.
If we were to do our own study right now say by regulating our eating habits throughout the day and then making sure we are getting the proper amout of sleep per night, do you think we would see a decrease in our weight?  It would be very interesting to see what the results would be.  I don’t know about you but I think I might conduct my own study to see what type of results I can accumulate based on my overall health and weight.

Have you ever seen weight loss results just by getting proper sleep?  Please share your experiences and how long it took you to achieve these goals.

What are you cleaning with?

Monday, May 14th, 2012

The past couple of years companies such as Melaluca and Seventh Generation products have been raising awareness regarding our every day cleaning products.  How harsh are they?  Well, if you have to close the door after cleaning, open windows, or cover your mouth and face that should tell us something.  I know many individuals would say that these chemicals are the only way to kill viruses and germs.  Though this may be true, what are these harsh chemicals doing to our overall health and well being?

A recent study was conducted stating that common household chemicals are the cause of rising cancer rates.  Scary right?  Seems like we can’t are constantly exposed to something that is a threat to our health.  What are other health concerns with household cleaning products?  They have also linked to low fertility rates.

What can we do to avoid being exposed to these household chemicals?  The best thing is to refrain from using them altogether.  Don’t panic, do some research before moving forward with this type of decision for yourself and your family.  There are a variety of natural and homemade cleaning products you can use all the while killing germs etc.,  Baking Soda and Distilled White Vinegar are excellent household cleaners while leaving a fresh scent and killing germs, etc.  Do these really work?  I would be lying if I didn’t say that I am currently using natural cleaning products and have been for quite some time.  Our families overall health has been better and allergies have subsided.  It was one of the best decisions I could have made for my family.

Click here to read the full article about the link with commons household cleaners and the rising rates of cancer.

What do you think about the controversy of household cleaning products containing harsh chemicals?  Is this a major concern or is it being blown out of proportion?  Please share any thoughts and/or opinions you may have regarding this topic.

Long distance swimmer the Polar Bear

Monday, May 7th, 2012

The Polar Bear is an amazing specie of animal.  Can you believe that the Polar Bear can swim up to 220 miles?  That is quite a distance wouldn’t you think?  It is said that their survival depends on this as the climate is constantly changing negatively affecting their ability to reproduce and thrive.

Summer sea ice conditions in the southern Beaufort Sea have changed considerably over the last 20 to 30 years, such that there is much more open water during summer and fall. (Environmental News Network)

It makes sense that they have the ability to swim such long distances not only for their protection but for their overall species.  What do you think of the Polar Bear and their swimming abilities?  Do you think that their species will remain endangered or will they be able to flourish and thrive as they try to adjust and adapt to effects of global warming?  Please share your thoughts and/or opinions on the subject.

You are what you eat, or you see what you eat?

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

If healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables were made more accessible to you on a daily basis, would you eat them ?  Your overall diet would become much healthier.

According to Enn.com. it would be easier to go for the fruits than the vegetables but why?

“The study results showed that placing apple slices and carrot cuts in closer proximity to participants increased intake of these healthy foods.” Andy Soos

Apparently, this study increased the desire for the apple slices but not so much the carrot slices as apples tend to be on the sweeter side of things.    Makes sense as have you ever eaten a carrot slice that was bitter?  Definitely not appetizing.  Well what do you think,  are apple slices more appealing than carrot slices themselves? I guess it depends on if there is some sort of ranch dip with the carrots right?  Unfortunately,  ranch dip can defeat the purpose of eating healthier.

Read here to read the full article on the study.  You may find it quite interesting!

Is 2012 really the end of the world?

Saturday, April 21st, 2012

You may have heard this said over and over again and according to the Mayan Calendar it is and referenced by educational documentaries and films.  Do you believe this or is it just going to safely pass through the next year like we did when it hit the millennium (2000)?  Remember the craziness over that?

Either way they are saying just like any large concern with natural disasters it is always important to be prepared in every way possible.  How, if it is going to be the end of the world, right?

Here is a list of ways to be prepared for the “end of the world” according to enn.com:

  • Lots of water
  • Lots of food
  • Tools and supplies
  • Important documents and medications
  • Have a family plan

Okay, these are great tips getting ready for any natural disaster but somehow I don’t think any of this is going to matter if we are facing the end of the world.  If it’s the end of the world won’t it mean the end of mankind as we know it as well?  Hmmm, makes you think doesn’t it?  What exactly is going to happen to the world if this is considered to be the end?  A global explosion?  Major Tsunamis that cover the earth?  Bombs?  Wow, well somehow I don’t think that the above list will be of any help if we will no longer be here.  What do you think?

Compost your toilet?

Friday, April 13th, 2012

File:Compost toilet sawdust.jpg

Okay, well actually it is compost away your stinky toilet but you get the idea.   There is a new product available to zap that stinky toilet odor, well reduce it anyway.  It is called Sun-Mar Composting Toilet.  Apparently this new invention does not require any “plumbing, local sewage connection, or septic system.”  Nice, right?

The Sun-Mar evaporates urine and composts solid waste according to enn.com.   It uses a three-chamber system.  This invention was designed to keep air circulating through the toilet to begin eliminating nasty odors.  Not only is the Sun-Mar Eco-Friendly, it also has quite an interesting look to it.  You can most certainly tell that this lavatory has something that no other regular toilet has.

If you would like to read up on more about the Sun-Mar Composting Toilet, you can read the full article here.

What do you think of the Sun-Mar Composting Toilet?  Would you go this route if it meant reducing odors in the bathroom all the while being organic?  Please feel free to share your thoughts on the subject.

Energy Saving Thermostat

Friday, April 6th, 2012

The Nest Thermostat is not your typical thermostat.    Apparently, the Nest Thermostat 2.0 brings “new energy features” according to enn.com.    This device isn’t exactly brand new as it has been available since December but now the reviews begin.

Here are just a few of the new features available on the Nest Thermostat as mentioned on enn.com:

  • Enhanced energy history
  • Specific energy-saving application for the cooling season
  • Additional remote features for the iPhone and Android
  • Updated internal menus

and more.

It is pretty interesting that the Nest Thermostat has the ability to be read on the iPhone and Android.  Technology has come a long way and continues to advance.  Before you know it, who needs laptop computers?  Everything will be accessed from an iPhone or some form of advanced mobile technology.  Everything just seems so much more technically convenient these days.

What do you think of the capabilities of the Nest Thermostat.  Will it really be an energy saving feature for everyone to enjoy?  Please share your thoughts and/or concerns on the topic at hand.

37 million bacteria can be from one person

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Now that’s a scary thought isn’t it? And this can be spread into just one room! According to enn.com, “most of this bacteria is directly stirred up from the floor, where they were left behind by the room’s prior occupants.” Well, it really should not be a shock when we get sick then if that is the truth. Yikes! So the dust off of the floor is the biggest culprit of this bacteria problem that we breathe every single day. Makes you want to go sweep, vacuum and disinfect every second doesn’t it?

If you are interested in reading more about a study that was conducted regarding this shocking information you can read it here on enn.com.

What do you think? Does this change the way you think about dust? What changes would you consider making after reading this information? Feel free to share your thoughts, and/or concerns on the subject.

McDonald’s will be testing paper cups before pouring those hot drinks

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

McDonald’s is out to use paper cups other than the traditional foam cups that so many are accustomed to.  Their plan?  It is to test them before pouring and handing over hot drinks to consumers.

The foam cups unfortunately, are a major cause for concern as they “create massive amounts of waste” according to the ENN.com.  Another reason McDonald’s will be jumping on board paper products is due to the major health concerns of styrene, found in styrofoam.  It has been reported that styrene links to cancer.    It makes sense that food chain giants such as McDonald’s would want to improve not only the quality of their food but their packaging as well.

Do you think McDonald’s is acting responsibly in this area even though they are constantly under fire for the quality and health of their food?  I know this is an ongoing battle for McDonald’s but it doesn’t seem as if they have much to worry about.  I don’t see them losing large amounts of money anytime soon.  We live in a fast paced world where food from McDonald’s is what people are unfortunately, turning to.  Is it even worth the effort to change over to paper products when their are ongoing health concerns targeted towards their food? Please feel free to  share your thoughts and/or opinions on the subject.
