Jeremy ‘Scapegoat’ Mayfield
Jeremy Mayfield has recently come forward and stated that NASCAR is using him as an example to the other drivers. After Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamines earlier this year he was suspended from NASCAR on May 9th. Since then Mayfield has been re-instated into NASCAR, tested positive for methamphetamines again, suspended again, and filed a wrongful death suit against his step-mother Lisa Mayfield. Now Jeremy is taking on NASCAR with a tentative court date of September 13, 2010. He claims NASCAR only suspended him to scare other drivers who also tested positive. He goes on to say:
“[NASCAR wants to] get the message back to other drivers in the sport, to put the fear of God into them. To scare the other drivers. And crew members and everybody out there. I think it killed two or three birds with one stone there with the policy. And it put the fear of God in other people and other drivers who have tested positive that they didn’t put in this situation. This was sending a message to them saying, ‘You better straighten your act up’, without putting them through what they put me through.”
Jeremy didn’t have to wait long for a response from NASCAR though. NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston countered with the following statement:
“The facts are clear and now recognized by the court, that Jeremy tested positive twice for methamphetamines. He was offered the chance to undergo the road to recovery but chose to go the legal route.”
