When I was a kid, my dad had one of those sprinklers that screws into the end of the garden hose and swishes back and forth in long, leisurely arcs. He’d go outside, set the sprinkler in a dry part of the yard, use a brick to weigh it down, turn on the water, and then set a kitchen timer so that he would remember to go turn it off and move it to a new part of the yard later. Some days, it seemed like he’d spend all day going back and forth from the yard to the house, dragging the solitary sprinkler to different corners of the hot backyard and setting the timer over and over again.
