The Growing Movement

There is a very real movement going on in our cities today. Across the nation like weeds community gardens are popping up and people are filling these little plots of land with all sorts of food. In residential areas I see people growing cabbage, composting, and even raising chickens. Now I am not talking about people who rely on their mini farms in the way that somebody in the Great Depression relied on their victory garden to survive, I am talking about people doing it so that they know how. These minature farms that I see on a regular basis are in the backyards of nice homes that are here at the beaches. People are empowering themselves by teaching themselves how to provide for themselves even if on a small scale.

This morning as I stood on my small back patio at my apartment my neighbor came out and we started making idle chit chat. Somewhere in the conversation she gathered that I was trying to start producing some food, she went inside and showed me her little avacado plant that she is growing in her home. She says that she sprouts them and helps people plant them. She has limited room to grow food, so her way of being part of this new movement is to help other people produce. We spoke about what it would take to grow some food in our little tiny plot of land, and I am going to get started as soon as I get a soil sample. How To Take A Soil Sample

I am going to create a small garden at work today, when I do I will post some pictures Yovia’s victory garden!

The idea of being able to step outside and grab a fresh tomato, or some spices to cook with is very appealing. Many of the stores that sell plants have created combination pots. These pots are a mini garden in themselves, with smaller herbs planted around the base of a tomato, or pepper plant.

Where I just moved, there are orange trees. I plan on adding a lime tree, a grapefruit tree, and an avocado tree from David. I will post a picture of it and give updates on it’s progress.

Bizarre how many people have recently asked me for an avocado tree lately. I have one for you Dad.
