Equus 3620 Vacuum Gauge Review

For under you can’t really complain about it. It’s definitely a light duty gauge. It’s not dampened and swings wildly in automotive vacuum applications. I got this instead of a 0+ motorcycle vac gauge for carb syncing. It got the job done, but I had to pinch down on the lines with a clamp significantly to get a semi steady, readable number. With a little extra effort I got the job done and saved in the process. I’d buy another if this one broke.

This is built relatively well, the hose is long, and it has all of the fittings I needed. For the price, I don’t know of any better. The dial size is very nice. It is very easy to read. I do not know why some people had wild fluctuations unless they were at too low of rpms. I did my adjustments at 850 rpms and it was very consistent and stable. Then I backed down to 600 and it was still great.

Very happy with the gauge–it is solidly constructed with a solid metal case and glass face. The gauge is large enough (4″ across?) that I could rest it on the engine and read it from the driver’s seat as I adjusted the throttle. Nice also that it comes with enough hose and fittings to be useful right out of the box…

Autel MaxiScan MS300 CAN OBD-II Scan Tool Review

for those with link error, I didn’t read the manual but you need the ignition in the ON position (not ACC or OFF). For those with codes that it read that had already been repaired… your mechanic should have cleared the codes in the computer after the repair but did not. Now you can clear them yourself. It’s possible the repair didn’t work, either, but if the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp, aka check engine light etc) didn’t come back on, you should be fine.

This Autel scans my 1998 Subaru Legacy and read the P0440 code just the same as the Actron. It cleared the code successfully and the MIL turned off. This unit also scans my wife’s 2010 Toyota RAV4, but it doesn’t have any check engine light to confirm codes or any of that stuff.

The included manual comes with generic DTC definitions, but the definitions are so short you need to search them on the web anyway to translate and determine the severity. That’s true with just about any scanner, especially those in this price range so I was expecting that. The manual does not list manufacturer specific codes that the tool presumably reports, but you can get those on the web. I’ve found that obd-codes dot com to be a good resource for _most_ DTC generic and manufacturer specific definitions. It also includes other details for generic codes that are helpful.

It is true that most auto parts stores will scan your car for free, but that’s not always convenient. Plus, if you have an intermittent problem that occassionally trips the MIL, you might dismiss any future instance of the MIL as the original issue, and potentially cause harm to your vehicle. If you own a scanner, it’s easy to regularly verify.

I also own a more expensive Actron CP9180 but I bought the Autel to leave in my car at all times. Since MS300 so inexpensive I wouldn’t be too upset if it gets baked in the summer heat. This product feels like a toy (very light and it has a short short cord…maybe 18″), but it seems to work. I only gave it 4 stars because of the feel of the product, but quite honestly I wasn’t expecting anything more based on the price and the fact that these are made in china.

My Actron has a lot of features that I’ll never use (I’m just a consumer, not a mechanic), but it is a solid product that will presumably last much longer than the cheaply made MS300. Even though I paid a cheaper price for the Actron on eBay, you can get three MS300 tools for the same price of the Actron, and the MS300 tool has every feature that normal consumers like myself need.

Worked great.
I read the reviews here before purchasing it. A few of the bad reviews seemed to be due to a poorly-written instruction booklet. Neither I nor my son had the slightest problem in using this device to read and reset the OBD-II codes.
Compared with the cheapest devices at our local auto stores (at twice the price) this did everything we needed. We saved a bundle by diagnosing our own problems instead of paying to any number of local shops to diagnose it for us (they charge just to read the codes!).
The fancy models provide a plain English on-screen definition of the codes. By looking up the codes in the book that comes with this product, we saved about 0 by purchasing this model.

Does everything that was stated in the ad. Didn’t solve my problem, but that’s another story.
I believe it will be of value as it gives a more detailed check the engine, (That is IF YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY FIRST!), At first I thought it was defective, then I REALLY read the instructions and I wasn’t doing it right.

If your the type that likes gadgets (me)and also like a heads up, when you have to take it in for repair or if you can repair the problem- well worth the money.

This is a great code reader that is designed for vehicle owner use. It doesn’t have the ability to read data stream. It can read freeze frame. the limited data caught as the code sets. This scanner works great on CAN cars. CAN is the protocyl required for cars sold in the United States 2008 & older. It will work on the older OBD2 cars, but seems a little slower on them. I would suggest buying a scanner that can connect to the CAN protocyl. You can find some cars out there that are older than 2008 that still have CAN protocyl.

The product delivers what it promises. It easily installed in Windows XP-Pro and Vista. It is by far better than many more expensive hand-held scanners.

The included software is very basic though. I was impressed with their ad for the optional software that included real-time data logging and graphing. If there were a rating for this software, I would give it the lowest mark. It is extremely cumbersome and most features don’t work in real-time. Maybe because Scan Tool is very slow, using the ISO protocol, which my Nissan uses to communicate with the Scan Tool. I understand that it is much faster in cars using the CAN OBD communication protocol.

I’ve got four Chevy’s from 2001 to 2008. Bought the OBDLink and ScanTool so I could work on them without having to go to a garage to read/clear diag codes. I’m pleased with the product. I use it with bluetooth for convenience… works ok.

I ordered this to diagnose and clear a check engine light on my vehicle. I got a mechanic to do that before this showed up, however. The good news is I believe I’m well positioned to do what I wanted to do the next time it happened.

The bad news is the install disk that came with the software wasn’t very helpful. I have a windows 7 64 bit laptop. The driver setup that came on the disk didn’t work. Of course, it didn’t say it didn’t work. But it didn’t.

If you find yourself in that situation, the D2xx drivers at (…) are the ones you need to make this product communicate with Windows 7 64 bit.

Once that was out of the way the product worked as advertised. It was able to show me the trouble codes (there aren’t any, so I can’t comment on its ability to clear them, but it’s supposed to be able to do that, too.). It could show me instantaneous RPMs and fuel consumption and plot those over time. A very basic software package, though much better ones are available.

So then I tried to connect to the device over bluetooth. If you check the manufacturer’s specs for this device, it has a “bluetooth option”. It wasn’t clear to me whether this device had it or not. It appears to not have bluetooth. When just connected to OBDII, the status LED does light up (red), but it’s not discoverable over bluetooth. Too bad, that would have been nice.

So, overall it seems to do what it says it does, but you need significant expertise to set it up, and the platform requirements are not clearly stated in any literature for this product. Driver updates are not available from the manufacturer. I had to dig through the install disk to infer what USB -> serial chipset was in use and get the drivers myself. Boo.

Equus 3721 Battery and Charging System Monitor Review

I have a 20 year old Nissan truck that has an “iffy” alternator. It charges most of the time, but I never knew when unless I actually got out and put a voltmeter on the battery with the motor running.

Well, this monitor did the trick, for now all I do is plug it in the cigarette lighter, and voila, I can tell if it’s charging. As said, most times it’s charging, but now I have the security of knowing if/when it’s not, and I don’t have to spend over 0 to get a new alternator (at least until this one finally gives up the ghost). The monitor also indicates the battery voltage when the motor is not running (there’s a chart that comes with it that tells you what’s good and what’s not).
If you have a suspicious electrical charging system, I highly recommend it.

Well, this monitor did the trick, for now all I do is plug it in the cigarette lighter, and voila, I can tell if it’s charging. I have owned this product for a while now and wanted to leave a review. I have to say that for the money this cost it is definately worth every cent. This thing does anything that the average home mechanic needs to do and then some. It is very easy to use right out of the box without any experience with it. The software that comes with it is pretty good too. I looked at several of these code readers from the most popular companies and I have to say that this one is by far the better one out of them all, the backlight for the display is genious no fumbling with a flashlight.

Even though this is a great tool is will not make you an istant mechanic. It can’t fix stupid.

Main Function Unusable without COM port available – Boomer –
Pretty cool tool altogether. Easy to use for reading and resetting codes. If you want to use your laptop to download and analyze data you are SOL if your laptop is anywhere near new. that’s cause this puppy does not have a USB interface. You will need to buy a serial(RS-232) to USB converter and hope the driver is included. Sort of surprising in this day and age especially as portability is the essence of this device that you can’t use it out of the box with a laptop!

Do you have a “CHECK ENGINE” light on? You will. And when it does come on you have some choices as to what to do. You can take your car in to get it serviced (and spend more money) or you can get an OBD2 meter (and save money). I looked at a few devices and decided to go to OBD Diagnostics, Inc. The product, OBD2 ALL-IN-ONE scan tool did just what it was designed to do. It connects between the cars OBD2 port and my notebook computer. I loaded the drivers and software and the car was talking to my computer within a few minutes. The tool “found” the problem and I was able to fix the problem. It does an awesome job integrating with my laptop. The interface is pretty good and the drawback comes from the fact that you have to try different software applications until you find one that works on USB. Once you get the right software (freeware) and place the laptop where you get minimal glare or inside the garage it works pretty good diagnosing and troubleshooting.

SUMMARY:

The scan tool came with an unlabeled mini CD containing several demos and an outdated version of ScanTool.net software (v1.13). There was no instructions supplied with the scan tool, except for a text file on the mini CD, written in broken English:

“we suggest that you can use “scantool_net113win”,if you think that this software isn’t easy to use, you can free to choose following software:EasyOBDII,OBD2Spy,ScanMaster-ELM.But them require lisence.”

The unit would not connect to 2000-2004 Chevy trucks, Nissan, and other ISO cars. Save your money and buy ElmScan 5 Compact or OBDLink instead, they come with the new OBDwiz software and let you purchase advanced manufacturer-specific software at bargain prices.

I ordered the wrong scanner/code reader and I was going to return it, but decided to keep it. For the limited ability I have to understand how to use it, it works well. I will obtain a book/help in understanding how to apply this tool, though I really wish that the manufacturer had made a more comprehensive manual. Also, the cord is short, which makes it a bit uncomfortable to use unless I am leaning forward, close to the dash.
