The last time I used a digital frame was 10 years ago, and I am very pleased with this new one. The color is good, the resolution crisp (even for text) and it isn’t too hard to use (although I did know what I was looking for). I like the ability to change the transition effect and, most importantly, the amount of time between images down to the second. I really cannot believe what a good deal it is for the price.

The only things that kept me from giving 5 stars were that the documentation was very light and not very useful, and I would like to have more controls for the screen. Luckily fishing around a bit allowed me to find everything, but I’m not very squeemish about these things. I can control brightness, but there are no controls for color balance and faces seem too red. Yes I can change them in Photoshop, but I’d rather not. Since all images are taken from the same camera at the same settings, I’d rather just adjust the color on the frame once and load it up.

I bought this frame because I got a good deal on it. I didn’t even search reviews because I have another SmartParts picture frame that’s been going strong for about 3 years now running 24/7. After I placed my order I decided to look at some Amazon.com reviews and I immediately got a little concerned.

Well fortunately my concerns were unfounded. Some reviewers that said it has a black plastic frame did not get the right frame or are reviewing a different one. This one has a VERY nice all wood frame. It’s a very classy dark stain. The craftsmanship (I’m sure it’s made by a machine) is excellent. Very surprising for an inexpensive picture frame. The matting also looks very nice.

Another thing in some of the other reviews that’s not correct; you do not need a computer to display pictures. I took my SD card from my camera and inserted it and the slide show started immediately. To copy pictures from the SD card to the internal memory just push the setup button once you are in the main menu and it will give you the option. I also wanted to try the USB port so I plugged one of my thumb drives in; I had a folder with music and a folder with pictures. Well the slide show started displaying pictures and at the same time started playing my music. Now that was very cool. I need to try that with my other Smartparts frame.

All in all; it does what it says it will do and does it very well. The picture is quality is excellent with good viewing angles. The menu is OK. When plugged into a computer it shows up as a mass storage device, so it’s very easy to load pictures. I don’t use the included software (which is good to use if you use the internal storage because it will compress the files to just the right size). The only thing I think it needs is a headphone jack.

If I can find another one at the price I paid I will definitely buy it. Highly recommend (if the price is right).

I have to admit, this review may be a bit biased. I had a Pandigital Tru-Photo Frame that died after a few weeks of use (sits on my desk at work – and I shut it off before I leave for the night). I had shut the unit off and my finger, inadvertently, hit the on/off switch again — it died on the spot. I purchased the NIX about a month ago, and so far so good! I even inadvertently hit the switch off, then on again (as I had done with the Pandigital) today and feared the worst! But, there were no ill-effects with the NIX. So I am very satisfied with the NIX. It was quite easy to get started — just drag and drop the images from my pc to the frame’s memory. I would give it a 5 star if it weren’t for one small issue (which the Pandigital did as well, so it may be inherent to these units); the ‘slide shuffle’ does tend to repeat images. I have about 50 images stored in the unit and sometimes you see the same image pop up much more frequently before it actually shuffles through all of them.

Most important to me was the image quality. As a semi-pro photographer I wanted to be able to display my work without too much loss of exposure/color quality from the original file. The NIX is perfect in that regard; colors are true and images are sharp. Compared to the Pandigital, image quality was a hand’s down winner with the NIX!
