Chilli’s New Bags: could they be used for advertising?

Chilli (real name, Rozonda Thomas), the singer from the popular 90′s band TLC, has started a new line of handbags that allow consumers to choose a photograph or image that will be permanently displayed on the bag.

The tagline of her website, Bags by Chilli, is “Advertise Yourself.” Since I work for a marketing firm, her tagline immediately started me thinking about the implications for marketing. In this down economy, companies could use her bags for subtle advertising campaigns.

Goodbye T-shirt advertising, hello handbags!

Artists and photographers could use the bags to display their handiwork. Brands could pay celebrities, athletes, and other people for product placements and to carry the bag during certain events. Take Chilli’s new role as spokesperson for Dasani bottled water. Chilli did a photo shoot for Dasani and could easily use one of the beautiful photos, like the one below, to advertise for Dasani on one of her bags.

Chilli might have just kicked off the next wave of wearable advertising.

Earth Day Salute to Ashton Kutcher

Ashton Kutcher used his Twitter influence to help prevent Malaria

Ashton Kutcher used his Twitter influence to help prevent Malaria

This Earth Day, props go out to Ashton Kutcher, who is using his celebrity to help save the world. Mr. Kutcher parleyed the media hype around his Twitter success into a check for $100,000 for Malaria No More, an organization that donates mosquito nets to countries affected by malaria. Malaria is the biggest killer of children in Africa, but it is treatable and preventable. A single, simple mosquito net can save a life.

So thanks, Mr. Kutcher, for using the power of your Tweets to help save the world.

Tea Parties: meaningless rage?

David McCormick wrote an interesting post about Wednesday’s “tea parties”, the protests that occurred all over the country on tax day. The protests were a response to government spending, or over-spending. I get it. I get the anger. I get that we’re in a recession, and that people are angry at the way their hard-earned dollars are being spent. But… tea parties? I’m not sure what the point is, other than letting out a little rage. The problem is that the protests weren’t focused on any particular piece of legislation or action. The protests were not trying to change or stop anything in specific. Without a goal, I think they were a flash in the pan.

Join Yovia, Join the Internet Revolution

As a writer, I am always looking for new ways to support my writing habit. If you’re like me and you’re reading this, you’re already jaded. We know all about those “work-at-home” schemes and pimping our blogs out to Google AdSense. But that’s old news. I recently became involved with Yovia, the company that is hosting my new blog, for free (thanks!). Yovia is a new kind of marketing company that wants to change the way we communicate and do business on the Web. Yovia has convinced me that a new Internet democracy is emerging, one where quality websites and offers rise to the top, and spam and sleaze fade away. Yovia believes this new Internet democracy means that we, the users, should get a piece of the pie for simply participating. I became enough of a believer that I have joined their network and installed their widget (check it out on the right side of my blog).

Why join?

There were several reasons why I decided to join. First, joining the Yovia blog network gives my blog instant recognition and audience; I’m harnessing their brand and their SEO strength. Secondly, they’re offering a widget program where I can get paid when people read my blog. Thirdly, heck, they are offering to host my blog for free. And lastly, I just like their philosophy.

Widget Program

The Yovia widget program is in Beta, and they are going to be monetizing it in the next few weeks. The concept is very simple: you install the Yovia widget on your network: your blog, website, Facebook, and MySpace pages. Every time a friend clicks on your widget, you make money. Companies want to get the word out about their products and services, but they don’t know how. What you have is valuable: a network of friends and connections. It’s a win-win: you earn money with almost no work involved, and companies get to spread the word.

I hope this post will be helpful to others… let me know if you have found other non-spammy online opportunities.
