Funding Your Idea

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

nifty lightbulbsAll great inventions started with a simple idea, a problem that you have a solution for. Most people have had one of these ideas in their life, but few have ensured that they come into fruition. Funding is the fundamental problem for most prospective young entrepreneurs. As in most things there is a way for those who know where to look. Bright Ideas is currently offering assistance to those people with ideas.  So if you have an idea and are searching for a grant Bright Ideas may be a good starting and possibly finishing point for you. Below is an excerpt and link from their website.

“Different departments of government have special provisions to provide grants for those who are willing to show their innovative, scientific and creative spree that would create an everlasting impact on the generations to come and would emerge as the most useful product for the whole humanity for e.g. U.S. Department of Energy I&I supports with grants to all small businessmen who promise to adopt in their work area energy saving concepts and technologies. Those technological devices, inventories and machines using very limited energy are entitled for the Grant of I&I.”

A Young Entreprenur Reaching For His Dreams

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Who ever said you couldn’t reach for your dreams at any age was sadly mistaken, at least in Michael Turner’s case. He Just happens to be a finalist for a England based entrepreneur contest. While he didn’t win, Michael is smart enough to recognize the value of getting this far. He himself stated that “I did meet a number of influential business people and have already gained business from being a part of the tough judging process”.
Now, you might be asking yourself why this Michael is so important. Well, it isn’t his computer company that is a big deal, its the fact that he is only 17, and runs a very profitable business. Still, even though its a good business, i bet that his parents didn’t age with him quitting school one year ago to run a company. Still, now i bet that they are pretty happy now.

Lifestraw

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

“Lifestraw” is a portable water filter for prevention of common stomach diseases; it can be carried around for easy access to safe and clean drinking water. Nearly 6,000 people (mainly children) die from unsafe water related diseases everyday. The Lifestraw was invented by Vestergaard Frandsen, a European-based international company specializing in complex emergency response and disease control products. The company was founded in 1957 and their products are designed to prevent waterborne, vector-borne and neglected tropical diseases. The Lifestraw is having a humongous positive impact on poor countries.

Secret Resturants Catching On

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Here is a thought, what if you are a celebrity in the big apple and want to get something to eat, but you don’t want the paparazzi after you when you eat. Well, it looks like you are already covered if you happen to live in New York.
Uo, a sushi bar in Manhattan is really a place with no windows. A hole in the wall accurately describes this place yet the food is unbelievable. According to the owner, business is way up. Though he isn’t tending to the stars that gave him his idea to began with, no, the middle class seem to always fill up the place. The owner isn’t complaining, in fact his idea is catching on else where as well. I guess this shows how anything can become a good idea.

Persistence, the key to entrepreneurship?

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Ideas are often thrown around with friends or colleagues all the time and sometimes are reinforced by investors and become a successful business when the person has the drive and persistence for the challenge of being an entrepreneur.  Businesses that come from great ideas take time and most of the time a small fortune to start and keep the idea going and growing into a larger business.  For instance a close friend of mine was an aspiring entrepreneur, he just lacked the persistence that someone like myself has to keep the idea constantly growing.  He came up with the idea to deliver food from restaurants and grocery stores that did not offer this to the public.  It was a great idea and thrived for a few years and him and his silent partner (the investor) at the time were even offered a chance to expand to other cities in Florida with this need, however because they lost interest they turned this enormous opportunity down.  They weren’t in it for the money, not because they had a ton of it but because they were just searching for their niche in life and a job that didn’t feel like work for them.  Which essentially is, in my eyes the biggest reason to turn an idea into a real business.  If you find something you love to do and can make money at it you will never work a day in your life and you will still be able to make money.  In order to make your ideas become positive numbers in your bank account, you have to tenacious, persistent, and have the ability to hear no and keep pushing on.

Plug and Socket Engagement Rings

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Everyone knows that when you find that special someone a spark ignites, thus causing an electrical current of love. Jewelry designer Anna Yu, of Yu Yu Design, has materialized this feeling into an engagement ring. The rings, which are modeled after a plug and socket, are designed to represent the future. The rings are silver and contain a plug and socket, which are masculine and feminine in design. The idea may be a little geeky to some, but others will surely find this quirky proposal to be quite heartwarming.

Ensure Better Dryness in the Rain with ‘Nubrella’

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

NubrellaIntroduced into the market last spring, the redesigned Umbrella would have taken much innovative thinking.  For those of you who live in terribly rainy and windy conditions even through just part of the year, you know how terrible it is when your traditional umbrella bends backwards and breaks on you.  Or when the wind and rain are so crazy, that it flies in all directions and around your umbrella, so it is not really doing you any good.  The inventor, Alan Kaufman states “I never planned on inventing a product I just noticed a problem and came up with a solution.”  This hands free design will allow you to talk on your cell phone and get to your destination more quickly, as it’s round design repels the wind more easily.  So is the Nubrella for you?  Take a LOOK and see for yourself.

Mushrooms Replacing Traditional Styrofoam in your Walls

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Greensulate

Greensulate is the name of this insulation substitute. Back in 2007, the founders Eben Bayer and Gavin McIntyre met as Mechanical-Engineering students attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. They have come up with a low-cost, biomaterial that is looking very promising to replace the currently environmentally harmful styrofoams and plastics used in walls today.  What makes this earthy technology so much different is the fact that it is grown, not created by chemicals and using up a lot of energy.  It is very low maintenance as well, being able to grow at room temperature, in the dark, doesn’t require expensive manufacturing equipment, and can be tailored to different levels of strength and flexibility.  “We like to call it low-tech biotech,” Bayer says.

They were given $16,000 in ’07 to fund their project they had labeled ‘Ecovative Design,’ and it proved to be worth it times about 45 what they received, as a year later they too home a $700,000 dollar prize from the PICNIC Green Challenge in Amsterdam.  They are currently working on their first project of replacing the insulation in a Vermont school gym.  Bayer and McIntyre are expecting to have completed all industrial certification and testing by the end of the year and have enlisted Jeff Brooks of the Timberline Panel Company to advise them on meeting American Society for Testing and Materials standards for building insulation. “If they get to the point where I think they’ll get,” he says, “there’s a chance there would be no reason to use conventional foam products.”
