What to Search: Types of Court Records
When you’re looking for information about a person getting started with your search can be a little overwhelming. It helps to know what kinds of court records are available for you to search either at a courthouse or another agency related to the type of court records sought, or at one of the many pay-to-search sites on the www.
The most popular types of court records and related personal records you’ll encounter in the process of searching about someone are:
Birth Records
Death Records
Marriage Records
Divorce Records
Background Records
Business Records
Bankruptcy
Employment Records
Government Records
Arrest Records
Criminal Records
Property Records
Mortgage Records
Not all of the above are court records and not all can be found at a courthouse. Credit records, for example, are often searched online via access to the Credit Bureau. Some Birth and Death records can be found in libraries, particularly if they pertain to ancestry. In such cases visiting a courthouse for these records would not be useful.
Before you begin searching, try to imagine what kind of information would be helpful to your search, and narrow down the types of records to search. When in doubt, call the courthouse and see if the record you’re looking for is part of court records. A little research will go a long way towards saving you time and money when you perform your actual search.
