Simple Hair Masques for the Summer

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

Don’t let your hair fall victim to the dog days of summer! No matter how hard you try, summertime is rough on the hair, as it’s exposed to humidity, chlorine from pools, the rays of the sun and extra hair products from summer nights on the town.

Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a fortune on hair masques that will help repair your hair and restore its natural shine and beauty. Hair masques can be made on your own, at home, with ingredients straight from the refrigerator.

First, determine what you want the hair masque to do for your hair. If you want to condition it for example, you’ll need richer ingredients such as eggs and oil. For cleansing, you’ll need lighter properties such as vinegar and water. Here are a few quick and easy masques that you can whip up at home:

Hair Conditioner

1 teaspoon baby oil

1 egg yolk

1 cup water

Beat the egg, mix in the oil and beat the egg again. When the mixture is frothy, add water and massage into the scalp. Rinse well.

Hair Build-Up Removal

1/4 cup vinegar

1 cup water

Use this as a final rinse after washing and conditioning the hair.

There are many recipes you’ll find, and the ones that condition the hair will use moisturizing ingredients such as egg yolks, avocados, coconut milk and mayo. Mixtures that remove build-up will use baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice and ciders. Not one works better than another; instead you’ll have to find the right concoction for your own hair.

Overall, these homemade masques are a great way to care for your hair, cut down on the cost of buying expensive products and allow you to experiment with different ingredients.

Human Hair vs. Synthetic Hair Extensions

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Hair extensions are a great way to extend the length of your hair without having to actually wait to grow your own. There are two types of hair extensions: Human hair and synthetic hair. Human hair is, of course, real hair donated from real people. Synthetic choices are made from synthetic fibers.

Not sure which is better? Let’s take a look.

Characteristics of Human Hair

- Lasts for up to 1 year when treated properly

- Can be color treated

- Can be used with styling tools, including irons and blow dryers

- Versatile styling properties

- Natural look

- Ideal for special occasions such as wedding days

- Drawback: Harder to maintain; affected by rain and humidity

- Cost: $76-$400

Characteristics of Synthetic Hair

- Lasts for 1-3 months

- Easy maintenance; style is pre-set and will not be impacted by rain or humidity

- Ideal for wedding days or other special occasions

- Made to look just like real hair

- Drawback: Cannot be color-treated

- Drawback: Most cannot be used with hot styling tools, as the fibers will melt

- Cost: $50-$85

As you can see, there are some major differences between the two choices. Ultimately, it’s a personal decision that will be affected by your budget and long-term vision.

However, human hair extensions are ideal for those who plan on having extensions for a long time and want the seamless look of long hair. Synthetic choices are ideal for those who want longer hair for a special occasion and have a smaller budget to work with.

Dry Hair Care

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Increasing the frequency of good hair days can be as simple as using the right conditioner for your hair. A lot of people don’t know why they have good hair days or bad hair days but it usually has a lot to do with how dry your hair is. When your hair becomes dry it starts taking on a somewhat stringy looking appearance. This is because the strands of your hair are made up of tiny shingles, not unlike a roof, and when they become dry they become ragged looking. Combating this is as simple as choosing the correct conditioner. If your hair is extra dry try using a conditioner with something on the label along the lines of for dry hair or for frizzy hair or for controlling frizz. These conditioners are generally more thick than your typical conditioner and will repair your hair over the course of the next few days. If you hair is extra damaged from over-zealous grooming with heated products or excessive coloring you may need to suck it up and cut the damaged portions off. Consult your hairdresser in these situations. You should absolutely never use hot grooming tools or hair dye on extremely damaged hair. If your hair is not necessarily damaged but is still looking a little frizzy try using a few drops of safflower oil in your hair. Massage it into your hair from the tips working down to your scalp. This is a great natural hair care tip that your friends won’t even be able to notice.

Do Those Expensive Shampoos Really Work Better?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Ok, we all see those ad’s on tv. You know, for those fancy bottles of shampoo. The ones that claim to do just about everything with your hair that you imagine. Most of the time, these “special” shampoos are recommend to us by our favorite hairstylist or barber. When i was sitting in my local shop, i was wondering this very question, does shelling out more really lead to better results? Or can suave really beat out the best of them?

This question of reliability is something that is very difficult to test. However, an old CBS test lead me on to the path of El-cheapo hair products. After their test was finished, they declared a tie between the inexpensive product, and the high quality stuff. That’s and interesting result, concidereing the cheap stuff was a fourth less with the same results.

But here is an interesting counter argument, most if not all of the big name companies spend millions of dollars of developing their products (which is why they cost more). This doesn’t mean that it works better though. I have had many incidents where the knock off stuff works just as well as the name brand.

Ultimately it is your call. If you are just trying to clean your hair, you could get away with buying a knock off brand. But, if you are focusing on something for your hair such as conditioning or nutrition. The named stuff is the way to go.

The thing is, taking care of your scalp is actually easier that taken care of your hair itself. No Shampoo for Frizz Control and Curl Preservation

curly hair

Why should you choose to go completely without shampoos Most shampoos bought in stores contain harmful ingredients for harder to maintain or curly or wavy hair. Ingredients such as ammonium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, etc. These ingredients can keep your hair from being as soft and smooth as they could be because they usually become a harmful foaming agent. Here is a simple tutorial on how to go through your shower process shampoo-free while really making your hair better than before.

Trim and Treat. Before starting this hair change, trim any split ends you may have. Then wash with a sulfate shampoo to clear any silicones from your hair. Remember, your hair may take 2 to 4 weeks to adjust and even become very rough because your natural hair needs to regain its health again.

Always wet your hair first in the shower.

Apply conditioner throughout your whole hair, massaging your scalp with your fingers and then rinse. This rids the dirt and dandruff, and only needs to be done every other day.

Next apply a moisturizing conditioner.

Untangle your hair using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb. Untangle small sections at a time, starting from the bottom and untangling to the scalp. Do this until all of your hair is untangled.

Let your hair soak in extra moisture for about 5 minutes.

Remember to then rinse your hair in cool or cold water, which will leave an extra shine and decrease frizz.

Leave some conditioner still in, particularly in dryer areas such as the ends.

Finally, add a gel or mousse to wet hair once you are done in the shower.

Some Extra Tips

If you do not want to completely ban shampoos from your life, there are alternatives to the harsh chemical so commonly found. You can look for non-sulfate shampoos in the store, or there are even some simple and inexpensive home remedies you can try. Here are a few:

Baking Soda Mix: This requires 2 ingredients: baking soda and warm to hot water. Baking soda is commonly found in supermarkets, health stores, and many convenience stores. Before you shower, you mix one tablespoon of baking soda with 1 cup of warm or hot water in a water bottle and shake until completely dissolved. Work into the hair, combing through, and then rinse completely.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse: Yes, this mix smells like vinegar, but once you rinse the smell will go away. If it does not, you are applying to much ACV. Combine 2 tablespoons of the ACV with one cup of water into a plastic bottle and mix it. Apply to hair, comb through, and rinse thoroughly.

Lemon Juice: Juice one lemon, mixing it with an equivalent amount of your usual conditioner. Work into your hair and comb through, then rinse completely.

Easy, Healthy Hair Now

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Healthy hair is as simple as 1, 2, 3 with this great list of tips to keep your hair in top shape.

  • Brush your hair before washing. This helps remove excess dirt and skin flakes from your scalp.
  • Don’t use plastic bristle brushes. As tempting and cost effective as they seem, they do an untold amount of damage to your scalp and hair.
  • Get a trim! Have at least half an inch of hair trimmed every 5 weeks to keep away those pesky split ends.
  • Vitamize! Okay, I made that word up, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take vitamins to promote healthy hair. B12, B5, and many A vitamins
  • Drip dry. Let your hair naturally dry and blot it with a towel. Roughly drying your hair as soon as you step out of the shower is bad as hair is more easily damaged when wet.
  • Deep condition your hair every 2 weeks. It’s good to cleanse your hair and give it a deep wash in a chemically enriched conditioner every so often, but don’t over do it. It can make your hair feel very heavy and tangle easily. That’s why I recommend this treatment every 2 weeks.
  • Don’t over wash it! Skip washing your hair when you can so it can fully benefit from the natural oils produced by your scalp.
  • Eat right. Nothing is better for your hair then eating right. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables like bananas and broccoli.
