Hair extensions are the latest fads in giving our hair a little extra personality. We add hair extensions to give us some additional length or to cover up a not so great hair cut. But hair extensions like our own hair must be cared for and maintained, so they will always look their best. This post is going to give you a few tips to keep your hair extensions in optimum condition.

  • Before washing, be sure to brush and remove all knots and tangles. Washing prior to detangling will make the knots and tangles worse. Make sure to use a good shampoo; the dollar store brand is not a good idea. Wet hair slowly in a downward motion. Do not comb or brush extensions when wet.
  • Use a soft bristle brush when brushing, and brush from the ends. Brush your hair no more than 3 times a day.
  • Moisturizing your locks is important as well. Hair extensions tends to absorb moisture from your natural hair. So using a leave-in moisturizing conditioner is a plus. Be sure to use products that are agreeable with hair extensions or you will end up with a greasy head.
  • Avoid heat as much as possible. They will last longer.
  • When going to bed it may be beneficial to wrap your hair. And if you washed your hair, be sure it’s completely dry when you go to bed, to prevent tangling.
  • Do not color, perm, or cut hair with extensions without being in the presence of a licensed beautician.
  • Always swim with a cap on. This includes visits to the jacuzzi as well.

These are few tips on maintaining your hair extensions so you can keep them looking their best. No one wants to walk around with a nest on their head. But if you do not maintain and take care of your extensions that exactly what you will end up with!

Dry Hair Care

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Increasing the frequency of good hair days can be as simple as using the right conditioner for your hair. A lot of people don’t know why they have good hair days or bad hair days but it usually has a lot to do with how dry your hair is. When your hair becomes dry it starts taking on a somewhat stringy looking appearance. This is because the strands of your hair are made up of tiny shingles, not unlike a roof, and when they become dry they become ragged looking. Combating this is as simple as choosing the correct conditioner. If your hair is extra dry try using a conditioner with something on the label along the lines of for dry hair or for frizzy hair or for controlling frizz. These conditioners are generally more thick than your typical conditioner and will repair your hair over the course of the next few days. If you hair is extra damaged from over-zealous grooming with heated products or excessive coloring you may need to suck it up and cut the damaged portions off. Consult your hairdresser in these situations. You should absolutely never use hot grooming tools or hair dye on extremely damaged hair. If your hair is not necessarily damaged but is still looking a little frizzy try using a few drops of safflower oil in your hair. Massage it into your hair from the tips working down to your scalp. This is a great natural hair care tip that your friends won’t even be able to notice.

Do Those Expensive Shampoos Really Work Better?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Ok, we all see those ad’s on tv. You know, for those fancy bottles of shampoo. The ones that claim to do just about everything with your hair that you imagine. Most of the time, these “special” shampoos are recommend to us by our favorite hairstylist or barber. When i was sitting in my local shop, i was wondering this very question, does shelling out more really lead to better results? Or can suave really beat out the best of them?

This question of reliability is something that is very difficult to test. However, an old CBS test lead me on to the path of El-cheapo hair products. After their test was finished, they declared a tie between the inexpensive product, and the high quality stuff. That’s and interesting result, concidereing the cheap stuff was a fourth less with the same results.

But here is an interesting counter argument, most if not all of the big name companies spend millions of dollars of developing their products (which is why they cost more). This doesn’t mean that it works better though. I have had many incidents where the knock off stuff works just as well as the name brand.

Ultimately it is your call. If you are just trying to clean your hair, you could get away with buying a knock off brand. But, if you are focusing on something for your hair such as conditioning or nutrition. The named stuff is the way to go.

No Shampoo for Frizz Control and Curl Preservation

curly hair

Why should you choose to go completely without shampoos Most shampoos bought in stores contain harmful ingredients for harder to maintain or curly or wavy hair. Ingredients such as ammonium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, etc. These ingredients can keep your hair from being as soft and smooth as they could be because they usually become a harmful foaming agent. Here is a simple tutorial on how to go through your shower process shampoo-free while really making your hair better than before.

Trim and Treat. Before starting this hair change, trim any split ends you may have. Then wash with a sulfate shampoo to clear any silicones from your hair. Remember, your hair may take 2 to 4 weeks to adjust and even become very rough because your natural hair needs to regain its health again.

Always wet your hair first in the shower.

Apply conditioner throughout your whole hair, massaging your scalp with your fingers and then rinse. This rids the dirt and dandruff, and only needs to be done every other day.

Next apply a moisturizing conditioner.

Untangle your hair using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb. Untangle small sections at a time, starting from the bottom and untangling to the scalp. Do this until all of your hair is untangled.

Let your hair soak in extra moisture for about 5 minutes.

Remember to then rinse your hair in cool or cold water, which will leave an extra shine and decrease frizz.

Leave some conditioner still in, particularly in dryer areas such as the ends.

Finally, add a gel or mousse to wet hair once you are done in the shower.

Some Extra Tips

If you do not want to completely ban shampoos from your life, there are alternatives to the harsh chemical so commonly found. You can look for non-sulfate shampoos in the store, or there are even some simple and inexpensive home remedies you can try. Here are a few:

Baking Soda Mix: This requires 2 ingredients: baking soda and warm to hot water. Baking soda is commonly found in supermarkets, health stores, and many convenience stores. Before you shower, you mix one tablespoon of baking soda with 1 cup of warm or hot water in a water bottle and shake until completely dissolved. Work into the hair, combing through, and then rinse completely.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse: Yes, this mix smells like vinegar, but once you rinse the smell will go away. If it does not, you are applying to much ACV. Combine 2 tablespoons of the ACV with one cup of water into a plastic bottle and mix it. Apply to hair, comb through, and rinse thoroughly.

Lemon Juice: Juice one lemon, mixing it with an equivalent amount of your usual conditioner. Work into your hair and comb through, then rinse completely.

Relax Your Way to Healthier Hair

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

According to the The American Academy of Dermatology’s SKIN Academy stress takes a huge toll on your body, and your hair is no exception. The truth is stress will make your hair unhealthy, even if it is just avery small percentage. When you are going through a rough patch in your life the anxiety can lead to many physical damages, causing even more hardship. So just take a deep breath, relax your mind, and continue reading to learn more..

The average person has about 100,000 hairs on their head, and daily hair loss is normal. Do not worry, a person loses about 100 strands a day, each one replaced within about 6 months or so. People are also going to lose a few hairs between washing your hair, brushing it, and styling. Around the age of 30 people, usuallystop growing hair as quickly.Men seem to show this more often and sooner. People usually believe that balding is due to losing too much hair when actually it is because replacement hair is not growing fast enough.

There are plenty of people who should have no reason to have hair loss, which is when you should re-think your lifestyle and stress levels. Stopping and taking time just for yourself for at least 10 minutes daily will help you to cool off. Being calmer and happier will show through your body, and thicker and healthier hair. So grab a nice book, a bubble bath, a walk, or simply a long nap and remember to be good to yourself .

Combs vs Brushes

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Choosing a comb:

Combs should be made of hard rubber or bone with perfect smooth teeth to avoid injury to your hair. Combs have two different sides: one is called a fine half the other a coarse half, both of which should be used in different ways. The fine half should be used for dressing the hair properly where as the coarse half should be used for untangling and combing the hair. Combing the hair rather than brushing assists in the polishing of your final look and gives your roots and scalp the benefit of massage.

Choosing a brush:

The brush you chose should have bristles well set into groups rather than far apart. Wire brushes should be one of your last choices if at all. Stiffer bristles should be chosen for people who have longer hair rather than a short hair cut. Brushes chosen with bristles that are the same length do not penetrate scalp as well as ones with searching bristles.
