Do Those Expensive Shampoos Really Work Better?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Ok, we all see those ad’s on tv. You know, for those fancy bottles of shampoo. The ones that claim to do just about everything with your hair that you imagine. Most of the time, these “special” shampoos are recommend to us by our favorite hairstylist or barber. When i was sitting in my local shop, i was wondering this very question, does shelling out more really lead to better results? Or can suave really beat out the best of them?

This question of reliability is something that is very difficult to test. However, an old CBS test lead me on to the path of El-cheapo hair products. After their test was finished, they declared a tie between the inexpensive product, and the high quality stuff. That’s and interesting result, concidereing the cheap stuff was a fourth less with the same results.

But here is an interesting counter argument, most if not all of the big name companies spend millions of dollars of developing their products (which is why they cost more). This doesn’t mean that it works better though. I have had many incidents where the knock off stuff works just as well as the name brand.

Ultimately it is your call. If you are just trying to clean your hair, you could get away with buying a knock off brand. But, if you are focusing on something for your hair such as conditioning or nutrition. The named stuff is the way to go.

Easy, Healthy Hair Now

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Healthy hair is as simple as 1, 2, 3 with this great list of tips to keep your hair in top shape.

  • Brush your hair before washing. This helps remove excess dirt and skin flakes from your scalp.
  • Don’t use plastic bristle brushes. As tempting and cost effective as they seem, they do an untold amount of damage to your scalp and hair.
  • Get a trim! Have at least half an inch of hair trimmed every 5 weeks to keep away those pesky split ends.
  • Vitamize! Okay, I made that word up, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take vitamins to promote healthy hair. B12, B5, and many A vitamins
  • Drip dry. Let your hair naturally dry and blot it with a towel. Roughly drying your hair as soon as you step out of the shower is bad as hair is more easily damaged when wet.
  • Deep condition your hair every 2 weeks. It’s good to cleanse your hair and give it a deep wash in a chemically enriched conditioner every so often, but don’t over do it. It can make your hair feel very heavy and tangle easily. That’s why I recommend this treatment every 2 weeks.
  • Don’t over wash it! Skip washing your hair when you can so it can fully benefit from the natural oils produced by your scalp.
  • Eat right. Nothing is better for your hair then eating right. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables like bananas and broccoli.
