This camcorder is awesome. It is easy to use, has solid video and sound, and is from Hitachi – the firm that invented the DVD camcorder. Actually, consumer reports has been very favorable towards Hitachi camcorders in general.
Basically, Hitachi has been doing this longer than anybody else, and so the end product is a bit better. They also don’t nickel and dime you. This camcorder not only comes with plenty of cables and a remote and stuff like that, but it also comes with the battery for the remote.
The camcorders battery last quite a while, while I find it convenient to use DVD-R discs. I haven’t bothered with the DVD-RAM discs since they don’t seem worth the extra cost to me.
I should add that the single advantage that the Sony models have has over the Hitachi models is that Sonys can use DVD-RW discs which give you much of the DVD-RAM advantages at a lower cost. The Hitachi’s are better in that they typically come with higher resolution and better reliability. Also, with some Sony models the users complain that they can hear the sound of the DVD spinning in the background of their videos. Such sounds can not be heard on my Hitachi.
I can’t tell you much about the Panasonic models, except the features and ratings didn’t seem as good.

My husband bought this camcorder for me for our anniversary in 2005. I have not had one problem with it since. I even took it to Iraq (a very sandy and windy place) and did my own little documentary!! The menu is easy to understand and follow. The fact that I can use dvdram discs or dvdr discs is really convenient. Great little bang for the buck!!

Ignore the September 17 review. It’s sad to see individuals, who do not have the patience to study the instructions, offer such inappropriate criticism because of their unwarranted frustration. The key is to READ the manual before using the camcorder. The explanations are in the manual. DVD camcorders are not as simple as the older 8 mm and VHS-C versions. The problem is that inexperienced people will buy this state-of-the-art technology, push a button, and expect miracles.
Once you gain an understanding of this camcorder, it will work as advertised. I’ve had mine for 2 months now and have had no problems. The picture quality is top notch. It works well in low light, although you should not expect night vision results. Autofocus works fine, just don’t pan too fast – and, in fact, if you are experienced at using camcorders you should not pan fast anyway (that’s poor technique). Manual focus is there if you need it. And, yes, you must finalize the disc – not a big deal (read the manual). When you see the features this Hitachi 3200 camcorder has, you’ll find that it is the best one going for the price – best value. It can accommodate nearly every recording format including DVD-RAM, and also will take 2.1 megapixel photos. Canon, Sony, and Panasonic can’t match it on features vs. price. I researched this and this sold me on the Hitachi 3200. I am not disappointed. Hitachi pioneered this technology and it shows.
UPDATE: As of May 13, 2008, my Hitachi camcorder is still going strong – including trips to Antarctica and Armenia (in the Caucasus)!!! No problems. Again, read the manual to appreciate this technology and to use it properly.
