The brand new Leica Summarit-M 35mm f2.5 is a lens certain to win ample praise from new and old users of Leica M rangefinder cameras and lenses. This relatively inexpensive (relatively inexpensive for Leica, that is) lens is a modern update on Leica’s classic 35mm Summaron, but offering more special glass elements (Three elements comprised of special high refractive index glass with anomalous partial dispersion, to paraphrase Leica’s own advertising on this compact lens.). Much to my amazement, it is almost as fine a performer wide open at f2.5 as its older, more expensive, Summicron ASPH sibling, and definitely rivals the latter’s performance at least by f5.6. Hence it ought to be quite desirable to those who want a Leica 35mm lens, but are unwilling to pay more than ,000 for either the Summicron (f2) or Summilux (f1.4) siblings in brand new or mint condition. I greatly enjoyed handling it at this year’s Photo Plus East, and realized that it would be a fine compact traveling companion for either my Leica M4 or M6 rangefinder cameras.

How is this lens as an image maker? Judging from the sample photographs I saw at Photo Plus East, I’d say that it is truly a lens capable of spectacular results. These pictures offered more contrast, as well as the high resolution that I’ve come to expect from the latest generation of Leica’s M-mount rangefinder lenses. If there is one slight sour gripe that I must express about this lens, then it’s the regrettable fact that its lens hood must be purchased separately (This is also true for the other Summarit lenses too.). Otherwise, I think anyone who appreciates a compact Leica 35mm lens with a focusing tab will be interested in adding this Summarit lens to their kit, either as their primary 35mm lens, or as a “back-up” to their Summicron or Summilux (or both) lenses.

I own a Canon VIXIA HF20 HD Dual Flash Memory with 32 GB Internal Memory and 15x Optical Zoom and I think it is a fantastic camera. However, I wished for a wider angle lens. Canon’s offering, Canon WD-H37 II Wide Conversion Lens for 37mm Filter Diameter Optimized for HD Camcorders is too expensive: currently 8.37 on Amazon. So I tried the Opteka 0.43x HD² Full Fisheye Lens for 37mm Digital Camcorders -. It is a true fisheye, very useful when you need that kind of effect (with a lot of distortion and vignetting, which is inevitable). It also has a macro attachment for close-up shots. The drawback is the picture quality. It is OK when the camera’s optical zoom is completely zoomed out. if you zoom in, the image gets completely blurred. I ended up buying another lens, the Sony VCLHA07A Wide Conversion Lens for Sony MiniDV & Hi8 Camcorders. It is also inexpensive, going for under , about the same price as the Opteka. However, its picture quality is excellent. There is little degradation, even if you zoom in. In fact, you can keep it always attached to the camera, so you get a wider angle than the normal lens, and great image quality in any situation. If you want a true fisheye lens and are willing to sacrifice optical quality, the Opteka 0.43x is a reasonable choice. If you need a not-so-wide lens (about 30% wider than the original with a 0.7x factor), the Sony lens is better.
