We are a long way from the family farms that grew just enough to feed themselves and sell at the market. Today we have big corporate chains in charge of processing and selling produce. Bought and sold in mass amounts keep these produce items from rotting can be quite a challenge. But thank goodness for pesticides and preservatives, right? Wrong. These harmful chemicals can damage your body and lead to future health problems.

Whats an alternative you ask? Well the local farmers market is a good place to start. These community based markets are popping up all over the U.S. as more and more people see the damage that supermarket chains can do. People are leaning towards supporting the local grower who puts love and care into producing a few bushels of apples rather than mindlessly spitting out barrels of pesticide ridden apples that will wait around for a while to be sold.

Although the local market won’t get you everything you need, it will provide cleaner produce that is fresh and guaranteed delicious. Also you would be supporting your communities economy. Besides isn’t it more enjoyable taking a stroll outside among fresh fruits and vegetables than weaving your way through crowded isle under florescent lighting?

So find your nearest farmers market and make a day of exploring all of what nature (and farmers) have to offer!!
