August 13, 2009 at 11:01 AM by mind2it

It seems to be an unwritten lawn that as a celebrity you must stand out. As if fame isn’t enough, you have got to wear the most eccentric and expensive things out there, cause wild scandals, and give your kid the weirdest name in history. Names like Jenny, Jim, Anne, John, are just to common. After you’ve looked at these baby names you will be glad you weren’t born as their kid.

10. Kal-El

Child of: Nicolas Cage

Its obvious that he likes Superman…

9. Fifi Trixibelle

Child of: Bob Geldof and Paula Yates

Imagine that name in the work place. “Ms. Trixibelle would like that report now.” How is anyone going to take that seriously. She better grow up to be a princess with a name like that.

What are they going to name their next kid, Banana?

7. Sage Moonblood

‘Prince’ that is a little odd. ‘Michael II’ is totally acceptable, but /Blanket…I mean WHAT? Unfortunately we will never get the story behind that name.

No more Word?

August 12, 2009 at 10:13 AM by mind2it

A Texas judge banned Microsoft from selling the Microsoft Office program, Word. This came after a Canadian firm, i4i brought a patent infringement case against the software company. The problem centers around the way Microsoft Word handles certain documents.

The Canadian company said that Microsoft “willingly violated” a patent agreement arranged in 1998 concerning methods for reading XML files, a kind of programming language. XML allows users to customize the format of word-processing documents, enabling them to be read by various word-processing programs. The ability to read and write XML is a key feature of Microsoft Word.

Judge Leonard Davis, of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, ruled that Microsoft had infringed i4i’s patent, and ordered the software giant to pay $290 million (£176 million) in damages. This included $40 million (£25 million) for the willful infringement of the patent, $37 million (£23 million) in pre-judgment interest, and a further $21,102 (£13,000) per day until a final judgment is reached.

(Wow that is a lot of money)

But that is not all he did. He banned Microsoft from selling any Word program that could open XML files or DOCX and DOCM documents in the United States. Microsoft has 60 days to comply.

Microsoft intends to appeal the decision.

“We are disappointed by the court’s ruling,” said Kevin Kutz, a spokesman for the software giant. “We believe the evidence clearly demonstrated that we do not infringe and that the i4i patent is invalid.”

Will Microsoft settle this with signing a big fat check or will Microsoft go bankrupt?

World’s Largest Cave Discovered In Vietnam

August 11, 2009 at 12:29 PM by mind2it

Caves are cavernous and scary places, filled with bats, bottomless pits, and other natural mysteries. In Vietnam, some brave explorers have discovered and mapped the world’s biggest cave.

The Son Doong cave is 262 feet wide throughout most of the passage, and features a 1.6 mile long river and 230 feet stalagmites. For a couple of miles of the passage, the cave measures 460 feet wide. A local farmer discovered the cave and led the joint British and Vietnamese exploration team in their April expedition. The team mapping the cave got as far as a 46 foot high wall before they were stymied.

“The second team that went in got flooded out,” Adam Spillane, a member of the British Cave Research Association expedition that explored the limestone cavern, said. “We’re going back next year to climb that wall and explore the cave further.”

The previous record-holder, Deer Cave on the Malaysian island of Borneo, is 300 feet wide, but it is much shorter than Son Doong. The Vietnamese terrain, which is filled with similar limestone caves, presented a lot of difficulties to the explorers. The research team surveyed the cave using precise laser technology to assess its size.

Look out below!

August 11, 2009 at 11:25 AM by mind2it

On Tuesday night, weather permitting, you may be able to catch a glimpse of plummeting space matter. A meteor shower, thousands of years in the making.

The Perseid meteor shower, which happens every August, has been visible for nearly a week, but it is expected to be most spectacular on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

The shower is made up of tiny particles of dust, the remnants of the comet Swift-Tuttle, which move around the sun in an orbit. As the Earth passes through the meteor stream each year, the dust particles burn in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, creating a radiant glow.

So turn your eyes to the skys, facing northeast, between 1 and 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning to witness a 2000 year old shower.

Homeless with a sense of humor

August 10, 2009 at 12:04 PM by mind2it

We’ve all seen those poor people, down on their luck, sitting on the street asking you for a dollar. Usually their signs say things like “Hungry need food” or “My dog is sick and I need money for his vet bills.” But here are a few homeless men with a sense of humor. I’d give them a dollar just for the laughs…

It happens…

Is this what he gets for being good?

This is a flawless scheme…

He is going to need more than a dollar…

I wonder what he is researching…

Yay for honesty!
