Dynatrap DT1000 Electronic Insect Eliminator Review

I bought this item about 2 months ago and it has been on 24/7 ever since. On the one hand, when I open it, there are piles of mosquitoes inside (along with quite a few moths). On the other hand, if there were any more mosquitoes still attacking me, they’d carry me off bodily! In other words, it does clearly kill mosquitoes, but not enough of them to make it pleasant to be outdoors. I’m going to order some octenol or the like to add to it, see if that makes more of a difference.

Update 8/13/10: The octenol attractant arrived, and yesterday I just stuck one up under the overhang of the lid, because I was in a hurry (being bitten by mosquitoes) and if I tuned the machine off, the bugs started flying out. Later, I emptied it anyway, so I’d be able to see what effect the octenol had.

This morning, there is a HUGE pile of mosquitoes in there! It is too soon to say whether this will make it possible to open my door to go in and out without my house filling with mosquitoes that eat me all night (let alone actually spend time outdoors) but it is very promising. So I’m adding a star to my rating, going from 3 to 4– with the addition of octenol.

Works better than a large Mosquito Magnet! – BongoMan – Key Largo, FL, US
It works right out of the box, however, another reviewer also mentioned it should be, when used outside, sheltered from rain. No mention is made of this on the box. It simply says “Durable all-weather construction.” OOPS! Too late! It’s pouring out – but it’s still working. One other thing this other reviewer mentioned is that, by removing the light bulbs, you catch fewer beneficial insects while maintaining a high mosquito catch. That’s good to know. The Florida Keys have lots of “skeeters” and the half-acre DynaTrap has been working better than a former one-acre Mosquito Magnet I used to have. I have an upper and lower deck and plan to get a second DynaTrap for the lower level soon. Even though it says it’s good for a half-acre, I have high reguard for whatever passes for skeeter intelligence! Besides if they come from the wrong angle they’ll pick up your CO2 plume instead of the DynaTrap’s. Skeeters are also attracted by movement. Maybe DynaTrap can add a gentle swinging motion to their apparatus!

Attracts everything but mosquitos – Pauly –
This unit catches at least 200 insects a night, but maybe 10 are mosquitos, and the balance is small moths and incests that are not a problem. I used the lights and attractant. My unit had a 6ft cord, not 10ft.The unit is hanging under my deck with a good line of site across the backyard. It does need to be located under cover, and not be exposed directly to the weather.I bought the unit 6/25/2010 and I just missed my chance to return the unit in the 30 day return window offered by Amazon. There was no information on where to put the attractant. I placed it under the fan base in the trap area. I will place the next packet by the lights and see if works any better, since I cant return it. I will continue to use Cutter Backyard hose spray insecticide every few weeks to try to keep these Georgia mosquitos under control

Its a Gimmick – Paul Demers – Boothbay, ME USA
My first Dynatrap blew a bulb within 2 weeks. I e-mailed the Dyatrap company and never heard from them. Amazon replaced the unit and now after just over 30 days both bulbs are blown. Amazon will not refund my money and they put me in touch with Dynatrap. Now I have to send the unit to Dynatrap to be repaired or replaced.
This trap does not catch many mosquitoes. Mostly other types of insects and moths. That’s why they call it an “Insect Eliminator” and not a “Mosquito Trap”.
Save yourself some money and aggravation. Don’t buy this product.
