Night Of The Living Dead! Starring: Duane Jones and Judith Odea

Rated R

Synopysis: When unexpected radiation raises the dead, a microcosm of Average America has to battle flesh-eating zombies in George A. Romero‘s landmark cheapie horror film. Siblings Johnny (Russ Streiner) and Barbara (Judith O’Dea) whine and pout their way through a graveside visit in a small Pennsylvania town, but it all takes a turn for the worse when a zombie kills Johnny. Barbara flees to an isolated farmhouse where a group of people are already holed up. Bickering and panic ensue as the group tries to figure out how best to escape, while hoards of undead converge on the house; news reports reveal that fire wards them off, while a local sheriff-led posse discovers that if you “kill the brain, you kill the ghoul.” After a night of immolation and parricide, one survivor is left in the house…. Romero‘s grainy black-and-white cinematography and casting of locals emphasize the terror lurking in ordinary life; as in Alfred Hitchcock‘s The Birds (1963), Romero‘s victims are not attacked because they did anything wrong, and the randomness makes the attacks all the more horrifying. Nothing holds the key to salvation, either, whether it’s family, love, or law. Topping off the existential dread is Romero‘s then-extreme use of gore, as zombies nibble on limbs and viscera. Initially distributed by a Manhattan theater chain owner, Night, made for about 100,000 dollars, was dismissed as exploitation, but after a 1969 re-release, it began to attract favorable attention for scarily tapping into Vietnam-era uncertainty and nihilistic anxiety. By 1979, it had grossed over 12 million, inspired a cycle of apocalyptic splatter films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and set the standard for finding horror in the mundane. However cheesy the film may look, few horror movies reach a conclusion as desolately unsettling. Synopsysis Link

30 Days of Night Starring Josh Harnett and Melissa George

Rated R

SYNOPYSIS:

Hard Candy director David Slade took the helm for this adaptation of Steve Niles‘ terrifying comic-book series of the same name. In Barrow, AK, one night can last an eternity. One month every year, this town is plunged into darkness for 30 days due to its location far north of the Arctic Circle. While extended periods of darkness are something that the locals have become accustomed to, this year something sinister is about to emerge from the long and unforgiving night. As a maniacal horde of vampires assumes control of the city streets and begins to feast freely upon the terrified citizens, the local sheriff (Josh Hartnett), his wife (Melissa George), and a small but resilient band of survivors will be forced to choose between saving themselves or helping the few remaining members of their community survive the blood-soaked siege. Original comic creator Niles collaborated with screenwriters Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson to pen the film, which was produced under Sam Raimi‘s Ghost House Pictures banner. Synopysis Link

Review: The best vampire movie I have seen in quite awhile. We are now oversaturated with these cutesy vampire movies and shows. Sam Raimi did his thing on this one. The setting was original and creative. I thought Josh Harnett played a great role as sheriff. He has grown up so much. It bloody and gorey. I loved it. There is no back story the vampires just kill and find the perfect place in the world where they have 30 days of night to hun. There is no crosses, holy water, and none of the mythical things we are used too with the exception of head chopping. It was great.

American Beauty Starring: Annette Benning and Kevin Spacey

Rated R

Synopysis:Noted theater director Sam Mendes, who was responsible for the acclaimed 1998 revival of Cabaret and Nicole Kidman‘s turn in The Blue Room, made his motion picture debut with this film about the dark side of an American family, and about the nature and price of beauty in a culture obsessed with outward appearances. Kevin Spacey plays Lester Burnham, a man in his mid-40s going through an intense midlife crisis; he’s grown cynical and is convinced that he has no reason to go on. Lester’s relationship with his wife Carolyn (Annette Bening) is not a warm one; while on the surface Carolyn strives to present the image that she’s in full control of her life, inside she feels empty and desperate. Their teenage daughter Jane (Thora Birch) is constantly depressed, lacking in self-esteem, and convinced that she’s unattractive. Her problems aren’t helped by her best friend Angela (Mena Suvari), an aspiring model who is quite beautiful and believes that that alone makes her a worthwhile person. Jane isn’t the only one who has noticed that Angela is attractive: Lester has fallen into uncontrollable lust for her, and she becomes part of his drastic plan to change his body and change his life. Meanwhile, next door, Colonel Fitts (Chris Cooper) has spent a lifetime in the Marine Corps and can understand and tolerate no other way of life, which makes life difficult for his son Ricky (Wes Bentley), an aspiring filmmaker and part-time drug dealer who is obsessed with beauty, wherever and whatever it may be. American Beauty was also the screen debut for screenwriter Alan Ball.

Review: Another super mega big budget apocolyptic movie. The word is going to be destroyed by series of natural disasters taking place all over the world. The government our government decides who will go to outer space in order to preserve humanity. It has my main squeeze John Cusack. It was what it was said to be. It has lots of great graphics. It kept you on the edge of your seats but it does get slow. It’s a great movie and time killer.

I give this movie 7 out 10 stars.
