My Pick – Best of 2009
Lots of ‘Best of’ lists are making the rounds on the internet right now so I decided to add my 2 cents. These are my picks for best music of 2009.
Animal Collective – My Girls
From the pulsing opening synth to the big bass beat thats dropped during the chorus this song feels like the culmination of Animal Collective’s work to date and then some. It’s got heart, it’s dance-able, catchy, quirky and everything in-between.
Gucci Mane – Wasted
Lil’ who? Gucci Mane took the mixtape world by storm in 2009 and successfully helped the world forget who exactly Lil’ Wayne was and why he was everywhere in 2008. Gucci stays true to the streets even when working with big names like Plies and Soulja Boy. He even ended 2009 with a jail sentence. Whats more real then that? His rhymes are tight and his fade even tighter so watch out because Gucci is sure to make a big come back when he is out of jail.
Phoenix – 1901
These Swedes started out the year being indie darlings and ended up soundtracking car commercials, and for a good reason. They are irresistible. The hooks, the drums, the synths, everything about 1901 will get stuck in your brain if you give it a chance.
The Horrors – Mirrors Image
The Horrors did a 180 sound-wise with their new album and it was for the better. They are influenced by the 80s without directly jocking any major 80s acts while injecting waves of vitality into a typically stale sound. They fired on all canons creativity-wise with this one to make an album that demands to be heard.
Gallows – Misery
Whoever says hardcore is dead clearly hasn’t heard Gallows. Gallows really pulled out all the stops with their album ‘Grey Britain’ this year to craft a hauntingly metallic masterpiece. Hardcore hasn’t had this much emotion and power behind it since the glory days and Gallows definitely do it right.
