How To End World Hunger

About 25,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes, according to the United Nations. This is one person every three and a half seconds, and unfortunately, it is children who die most often. In the United States most of us know nothing of hunger. You may skip a meal and feel hungry, you may even fast and feel like you are going to starve. The fact of the matter is though, that even while you are fasting choosing not to eat you are surrounded by food. You always have the opportunity to eat should you become too weak, I mean think about how many times you have seen friends drop out of a week long or even a three day fast. We know nothing of hunger. Medical doctors say that a human being can last 4 to 6 weeks with no nutrition of any sort, we cringe at the thought of it. We could not even fathom going so long without eating, but there are human beings out their that go through this hunger, and die from it.

Most people have probably done something to help end hunger to a degree, felt good about their sacrifice, stopped thinking about it and gone on with their lives.  What if I told you that by taking ten minutes out of your day to get on the computer you could not only end world hunger but help out a slew of other charities? Would you be interested? You can, and hopefully after seeing how easy it is you will. The Hunger Site lets you donate to several charities simply by clicking a button. You can help end world hunger, help women receive free mammograms, give free health care, give free books to those children who need them, you can protect endangered habitats, you can even give free food and care to animals in need. Every day you can click on each of those links and make a difference in the world, the way it works is simple advertisements are shown to you after clicking the link and the revenue from those ads goes towards that specific charity. Doing this each and everyday will make a difference.

Now I hear what you are saying “That took 2 minutes not 10, what else can I be doing from my computer?” Well I am glad you asked, most of you have probably heard about the site Free Rice, the fun game that lets you feed people in need. The way it works is there is a word game, and each time you answer correctly you donate 10 grains of rice. I spent 8 minutes on it just clicking through as fast as I could and I got 640 grains of rice donated. I was getting most of them right, it was a good day for me. Lets say that you average 500 grains of rice a day, well that is 3500 grains a week, 14,000 grains a month, and 168,000 grains a year!  How much rice is 168,000 grains? Well a pound of rice is 29,000 grains, so you will donate just under 6 pounds of rice. That may not seem like much, but you are feeding people with little effort. Let us take this one step further and assume that we are also trying to convince our friends to take 10 minutes of their day to click around on the internet. If you convince 4 friends who each convince 2 friends then together you guys will be donating 78 pounds of rice.

Some of you guys may be getting excited and wondering what else you can do to help make a difference. All you have to do is google it. For example you could do a bake sale and donate to any number of charities, you could even host an empty bowl dinner. For those of you who have never heard of an empty bowl dinner the premise is very simple. People pay to come and eat a small meal, prices are generally around 15 dollars with the option to donate as much as you want. What happens is people come in sit down and are usually given an empty bowl, they get to keep the bowl(potters will usually make a slew of cheap bowls for a good cause) they get to stare at their empty bowl while somebody talks to them about world hunger. People start to get hungry and grumpy and this is supposed to raise hunger awareness. After the speech about hunger which seems to take forever, people are dished out a normal portion of food. Lots of money can be raised and if you want more information you can find out how to set one up at the empty bowls website http://www.emptybowls.net/
