If everything goes as planned, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) will become the first place in Mumbai and country to have battery powered public bus service. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning to start battery power bus service between Bandra and Kurla point.

A MMRDA official on the condition of anonymity said, “We are looking for better technology and suppliers for the buses. We need buses that can run 200 km per charge.”

There are buses that run 40 km per charge, but to use it in public transport, we need higher range and better quality of bus, he added.

MMRDA is also looking for operators and investors for this project, as BEST has managed to get a private company to give then 50 world class Volvo buses in return of advertising revenue, it is learnt.

Battery power buses will have zero carbon emissions, but MMRDA is scouting for better performance buses that can make the service viable in the city with the output they are looking for.

However, the project is in the preliminary stage and looking after all the aspect this will be implemented all across the city.

“Main concern is that battery-run buses have less power (torque), it is still in the trail phase across many countries worldwide. However, it is good for environment as it will reduce carbon emissions,” said Rajesh Gangar, transport expert.

Currently, nowhere in the country battery power buses are used as public transport. Few buses are used in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Powai area of Mumbai and some campus across the country.

This is the first time in India any government agency is studying to implement this for general public.

Battery-powered buses make less noise on road. It is also cheaper and easier to maintain, as they require no tune-ups or oil changes, and typically only take between six and eight hours to fully recharge. These buses are more energy-efficient than vehicles that employ traditional internal combustion engines.

Their unique feature is an innovative regenerative braking system that uses the motor as a generator to return as much as half of the vehicle’s kinetic energy to the batteries each time the brakes are used.

It is used in many foreign countries, such as China, US, Hong Kong, Germany, UK, Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Norway, Sweden, New Zealand, Spain and under test in Switzerland since April 2010.

MSRTC to buy 25 Volvo bus, another 35 bus on rent

In order to cater the huge demands from the passengers on the Pune route, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will be adding another 60 A/C Volvo buses on their existing and new Pune routes.

Currently, the state transport is running 130 daily services from Dadar (Mumbai)-Pune to and from with their existing 72 Volvo buses. More than 10,000 passengers are using the service daily.

Speaking exclusively to ITP, Vice Chairman & Managing Director of MSRTC, Deepak Kapoor said, “We are going to buy 25 buses, including 2 jumbo multi-axel buses that are longer than the existing Volvo buses and another 35 buses will be rented from the company.”

“The delivery of the buses will start from mid-February and by June 15, we will have all the buses running on the routes,” he added.

The state transport will use these buses on Thane-Pune, Borivali-Pune, Nasik-Pune, Aurangabad-Pune routes.

The cost of Volvo A/C buses are pegged at Rs 75 lakh per bus and Rs 1 crore for a jumbo multi-axel bus.

“The jumbo multi-axel bus will be used on the Mumbai-Pune-Bangalore route. The bus is 14 meters long as against 12.5 meters, the existing Volvo bus, it will have 53 seats as against 45. The bus seats are as good as business class seat of aeroplanes,” said a transport official on the condition of anonymity.

“It is very nice to see that MSRTC is increasing the frequency of buses to Pune and importantly from different locations, I stay in Borivali and I have to come to Dadar to catch Shivneri (Name of the Mumbai-Pune bus service),” Rakesh Gada, a software professional from Borivili.

MSRTC is expecting to increase its revenue and frequency in service in the coming month; they are also running a campaign from January 1 to March 31 to increase the passengers.

It carters to more than 70 lakh passengers’ daily and more than 240 crore people used their service in 2009-10, earning them Rs 240 crore. They have also earned a profit of about Rs 70 crore for the same period.

MSRTC has recently launched new semi-luxury service to Goa. In the current fiscal till today, they have seen 5 per cent increase in passengers traffic. It is leader on the Mumbai-Pune route. The cost per trip to Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai in the A/C Volvo buses is about Rs 500-525 per passenger.
