Chloral Hydrate Sedation: Do You Want it For Your Child?

Most everyone hates a trip to the dentist and children are no exception. Sometimes there are procedures that have to be done that may require your child to remain totally calm and relaxed. For those occasions there is a drug called Chloral Hydrate.

Chloral Hydrate is a sedative that will make your child feel sleepy. It is used primarily for younger children such as toddlers and infants but is it safe? First, it is not like anesthesia where your child is asleep. Chloral Hydrate keeps the patient conscious the entire time but in a relaxed state. Many children may fall asleep during use of Chloral Hydrate but unlike anesthesia, they can be easily awoken. However, use of the product calls for monitoring of the child. The oxygen levels and breathing are important to keep up with and a monitor is used on the child to keep up with the results.

With all of that said, this is a safe product that is given to a child by a trained professional, similar to an anesthesiologist. As long as you are honest with your dentist about any issues your child may have, this is a relatively harmless alternative to having a child that won’t sit still for a procedure.
