Installing Car Racks!

Maybe you have a smaller vehicle, and not so much cargo space. But you are an avid outdoors person who enjoys, biking, skiing and maybe kayaking. So what to do? A great option is installing a car rack on your vehicle. These racks carry extra luggage, skis and bikes. It is a great space saver.

First thing to consider is the type of rack. There are many types and brands. Are you carrying just bikes or maybe skis too? Or maybe you want one that can carry various things depending on what you are doing. Do you go with a factory rack or buy one out of a store? Factory racks are the simplest. You can go to your car dealer and they can find the exact one for your make and model. It pretty much makes the installation cake. Or if you decide to go to a store it may be cheaper, but you will have to figure out most of the installation yourself.

Choosing a rack is the next biggest issue. There are four types of racks. I am going to go through each one.

Roof Racks: These racks can carry the biggest variety of equipment. They can hold luggage, bikes, skis or other things.

Strap Rack: This rack attaches to your car and is removable. You only use it when you need it. The downside to strap racks is they can only carry bikes and are limited to only 3 at a time.

Hitch Rack: This is an easy rack. If you have a hitch, just attach it. You can get different racks for different size hitches so you can pretty much carry whatever you want.

Truck Rack: Don’t worry, truck drivers, we did not forget about you! Trucks racks are put into place on the tailgate or side rail. They are mainly used for bikes.

This is just some interesting information about car racks if you are in the market for a car rack. Above you will also find a video telling more tips about installing car racks.

Kayaks: What is your Kayak style?

It’s summer: time for a little fun in the sun! There are lots of things to do, especially water activities, like kayaking. Kayaking is great fun for the entire family. But how do you know which is the best kayak for what you are doing? I bet you thought, like me, that all kayaks are the same. Well let me share something with you. They are not the same and not all used for the same types of activities. Kayaks fall into one of four classifications:

Ocean/Sea: These kayaks are built longer and are able to withstand saltwater. These are also acceptable for flat water travels because they cannot handle whitewater due to length and size.

Whitewater Kayaks: These kayaks are smaller. They are easier to handle for that reason. These particular kayaks are built for short fun activities, not long, grueling trips.

Recreational Kayaks: These are suitable for groups. They can hold multiple people. These kayaks can be custom built to suit your needs, whether you want them for sea trips or whitewater rafting. They can be built for speed or just paddling.

Speciality Kayaks: This category covers everything else. You have the folding, inflatable, and traditional kayaks. These are more for convenience. They can be put away easily when not in use and are easier to store and carry.

These are the various types of kayaks. You just need to choose which is the best for you. There is a kayak for everyone. Most kayaks can be built to your own specifications if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for.

But, if you’ve never been to a sauna, you might not know how to use it or what the benefits are. The truth is that while the use and means of creating saunas is often seen as a modern luxury, saunas have their own place in history that range from family tradition to religious ceremonies.

A sauna is basically a heated room or building. The comfort level of the room is adjusted by controlling the humidity in the room. The temperatures in some saunas would be intolerable if it weren’t for the ability to adjust the humidity.

Though various cultures have their own uses for saunas, today they are often used as part of a health regime or as a means to calm the senses. Depending on the manner of heating the sauna, various scents can be used to create a comfortable atmosphere.

Not only can people benefit from the calming sensation found in saunas, they can also benefit by using the sauna for detoxification. The human body is a wondrous machine that has its own way of expelling toxins. Sweat is just one of the ways that toxin can be released from the body. A sauna promotes sweat so that the toxins are released. There are even theories to suggest that weight loss can occur from the use of saunas since some water weight is lost and the toxins that are removed from the body may be toxins that were preventing weight loss.

And, there’s nothing worse than carrying your marinated steak out to the grill with your mouth watering only to find that the grill is in such horrible shape, there is no way you can cook on it. You trudge back inside with your head down, wishing that you would have taken better care of your grill. Why not use the tips below to avoid this nightmare ever happening again?

Use a grill cover. Yes, it really is worth the expense to purchase a grill cover that will protect your grill from the outdoor elements.

Protect your grate. You might try using a nonstick spray on the grate of your grill. Not only is the spray helpful in keeping food from sticking to the grate, but it also helps to protect the metal from chemicals in the food that may react badly with it.

Use only the heat you need. Every time you heat a metal up you weaken it. Grills are no different. Don’t leave grills hot if they don’t need to be. Or, you can leave them hot and accept the fact that you’ll be replacing metal parts soon.

Keep it clean. Of course, keep your grill clean. It not only extends the life of the grill, but makes it a healthier way to cook your food.

If you’re looking for a quick and easy lawn game to pass the time on a warm afternoon (or to get your irritating in-laws out of your house), you might consider learning how to play horseshoes. This game is pretty old, possibly even originating in ancient Rome, but it’s still an enjoyable and relatively inexpensive endeavor.

Find a metal or wood stake and stick it about 40 feet from the area you’ll be pitching the horseshoes from. 40 feet is the official regulation distance, but if you’re short on space, you can place the stake anywhere you’d like. Place another wooden stake at the “throwing” spot. Or just use another landmark like a grill, a water cooler, or your Aunt Hazel.

If you have an even number of players, split them into two separate teams. If you have an odd number of players, you can just play a game where all of you compete against each other. Find a way to decide who will go first. Traditionally, people flipped coins to do this, but you might try another approach. Have a dance-off or have the person with the most Facebook friends go first…I don’t know. Anything will really do.

The first person to pitch should throw two horseshoes in a row and so should each subsequent player. Each successful toss around the stake is worth one point. The game is over when one person or one team reaches 21 points. You will probably need two horseshoes per player, but if you don’t have that many, you can just recycle the same two horseshoes and mark the spots where the previous throwers’ pitches landed.

What to consider when installing your hot tub or jacuzzi

Planning on buying an outdoor hot tub or jacuzzi? It’s not as simple as just setting it up. There are things you need to know when considering installation. For example, you must determine the size of the hot tub or jacuzzi: do you want a small one that may hold four, or a bigger one that could hold four or more?

There aren’t a lot of steps to installing a hot tub or jacuzzi but there are things to think about. The first thing is location, location, location. You need to find a strong area if it will be in your patio/deck area. The area needs to be able to support the jacuzzi or hot tub filled with water. It needs to be close to your main water supply. You also need to look up and make sure it not sitting directly under power line. You want to cook BBQ, not yourself.

If you have a deck consider installing under the overhang. It will keep your hot tub from being exposed to the elements. You may decide on outdoor lighting or speakers to listen to the music while you lounge. These are just extra perks worth considering when installing your hot tub or jacuzzi.

Prior to buying a home, I never thought much about patio designs. My father used alternating brick to make a patio for my childhood home, but that was pretty boring to me at the time. Now that we have our own home, I’ve been thinking about what to do with the unfinished patio in our backyard. These patio design pictures have given me a little inspiration to work with (when we get the money).

Used as an entryway, this patio design is very similar to the one my father constructed. It’s simply different colored bricks set in an interlocking herringbone design. It’s hard to break, it’s easy to maintain, and it’s fairly inexpensive. The designer added a couple of steps and then a landing, so you get plenty of time to notice how nice the work is. (Courtesy of: Landscape Design Advice)

Here’s a great patio design idea for backyard pools. Build a concrete cornerstone patio at the level of the home’s exit and then drop it down a foot or two to allow for the pool. Guests can walk directly from the house to the pool without getting grass on their wet feet. Should we ever become fabulously wealthy, we might install an in-ground swimming pool. Until then, the sprinkler will have to do. (Courtesy of: Concrete Network)

Oooohhh….this is just gorgeous. And it’s so simple too. Just lay white stone brick in a circular shape and then edge it with a small garden. This we can probably do when the kids get a little older and we can trust them not to run through the plants. This patio design is begging for a sun dial. Can’t you see putting a stone sun dial in the middle of that circle? Oh, it’s just me? Okay. (Courtesy: Olde World Brick Pavers)

This design wins for sheer originality alone. How many people see wood circles and think “That’ll make a good patio!”? Very, very few, my friends. Whoever came up with this is a genius. To make this at home, lay out wood circles in various sizes and then use sand to fill up the gaps. The larger wood circles double as stepping stones, so they’d be great to use in a garden. (Courtesy: Dornob)

It is summertime again. And it’s going to be a hot one! Some of you may be in the market for a pool this summer. If you are considering an above-ground pool, this blog will help make that decision easier for you. I am going to lay out all the pros and cons for having an above-ground pool.

The pros of having an above-ground pool are:

- It’s good for people on a budget. It is the most affordable pool option. Of course pricing still varies according to size, material, installation, etc. But it’s still more economical than an in-ground pool.

- If your space is limited this is a great option.

- If you decide one day the pool thing is over, above-ground pools can be easily taken apart and disposed of.

- Installation and maintenance of an above-ground pool are also considerably easier than an in-ground pool.

As you can see above-ground pools have a lot of pros, but with pros must come the cons:

- The above-ground pool does not have the same beauty and allure as the in-ground pool.

- You are limited with regard to doing anything exciting with it in landscaping.

- The sizes of above-ground pools are far smaller than in-ground pools and do not offer the generous amount of swimming space.

- Also you have may have to gain permits to even install an above-ground pool. Your area may be restricted and if so, you can’t have one at all.

These are all things to consider when purchasing any pool. You want to find the right fit for you. Decide what’s in your budget and weigh all the above information so you can make an educated choice.

Summertime is swiftly approaching, and Memorial Day is right around the corner. That means it’s barbecue season! Barbecuing is a tradition in many families. Everything is similar when it comes to barbecuing until you mention charcoal or gas. For years, those two forms of fuel have been debated regarding which works the best.

Charcoal is the original fuel of the cookout, used before gas came along. Charcoal grilling is simple because the only thing you have to do is pour the coals into the grill, squirt some lighter fluid over the coals, light it and wait for the fire to get to the hotness you want. The only temperature control is pouring a little water on the flames. Some people use hickory chips soaked in water to add some flavor to the meat being grilled. The charcoal clean up, however, is a little messy. You must wait until the coals are all burned out. Then you must scoop the coals out of the grill into the trash.

Gas grilling is a little easier because everything is set up like an outside stove. No coals needed; just turn the propane on, and turn on the portions of the grill that you want to use (they work just like the eyes on a stove). There is temperature control on the gas grill; just turn the knob. The flame will come out from the bottom and can be adjusted depending on the temperature.

Buying charcoal is cheaper than buying a propane tank. However, buying a propane tank could be a better investment. There would be more uses out of propane than buying a bunch of bags of charcoal.

Which form of grilling is better? It tends to be a matter of personal preference! Try both and see which you prefer.

To understand the pros and cons of the two elements Bromine and Chlorine for pool systems, we must first figure out what they are.

Bromine: A non-metallic chemical element that is considered to be the only non-metallic element that is liquid at room temperature. When handling Bromine you must be extremely cautious because it’s highly toxic and radioactive. Bromine is found in an assortment of industrial cleaners and compounds. Pool and spa owners are familiar with Bromine because it comes in the form of tablets that are used in water treatment.

Chlorine: A natural element that looks like a yellowish greenish gas at room temperature. When under the correct pressure and temperature, Chlorine can be turned into liquid form. Chlorine is also found in bleach (what makes your clothes white). We generally come into contact with Chlorine when we go swimming. It’s what kills the germs that people bring when they go swimming.

Advantages for Chlorine:

Chlorine treatments cost less than Bromine of the same volume.

Chlorine dissolves quickly in water below 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Chlorine is easy to use and it begins to work quickly.

Advantages for Bromine:

Bromine remains more stable in hot water than Chlorine.

There are fewer skin, eye, and hair problems when in a Bromine treated pool.

Bromamines are effective for killing bacterias and viruses.

Only your own lifestyle, needs and situation will be able to tell you what’s best for YOUR pool.
