It’s summer: time for a little fun in the sun! There are lots of things to do, especially water activities, like kayaking. Kayaking is great fun for the entire family. But how do you know which is the best kayak for what you are doing? I bet you thought, like me, that all kayaks are the same. Well let me share something with you. They are not the same and not all used for the same types of activities. Kayaks fall into one of four classifications:

  • Ocean/Sea: These kayaks are built longer and are able to withstand saltwater. These are also acceptable for flat water travels because they cannot handle whitewater due to length and size.
  • Whitewater Kayaks: These kayaks are smaller. They are easier to handle for that reason. These particular kayaks are built for short fun activities, not long, grueling trips.
  • Recreational Kayaks: These are suitable for groups. They can hold multiple people. These kayaks can be custom built to suit your needs, whether you want them for sea trips or whitewater rafting. They can be built for speed or just paddling.
  • Speciality Kayaks: This category covers everything else. You have the folding, inflatable, and traditional kayaks. These are more for convenience. They can be put away easily when not in use and are easier to store and carry.

These are the various types of kayaks. You just need to choose which is the best for you. There is a kayak for everyone. Most kayaks can be built to your own specifications if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for.
