Elderly assisted living facilities are disproportionally located in more affluent areas, according to a recent Harvard Medical School study.
After calculating the ratio of number of assisted living units per thousand of people over 65 years of age for every state, researchers found that the locations of the facilities showed a strong connection to the education levels, property values, and ethnic makeups of the areas. More facilities were found to be situated in areas with a lower proportion of black and Hispanic residents—a correlation researchers said they found “disconcerting.”
According to a report by the Business Week, these findings aren’t surprising because private dollars have fueled the growth of assisted living facilities, write the researchers. However, the findings do mean that people with lower incomes, minorities and those living in rural areas have fewer living options as they age.

An adopted girl who fantasized that her real mother was Nancy Reagan turned those youthful dreams into a television series.
According to an AP report, the new CW network series “Life Unexpected,” about a 16-year-old girl in foster care discovering her birth parents, came directly from the life of creator Liz Tigelaar. The series debuts on Jan. 18. While the pilot was the first ordered for the network’s 2009-10 season, it was the last picked up to become a series.
As a girl growing up in Texas, Tigelaar dreamed about who her birth parents were. Since she heard her birth mother lived in Washington, D.C., she believed it was Nancy Reagan — until her mother told her it was biologically unlikely, reports AP. Tigelaar is 34; the former first lady is 88.
While Reagan didn’t make it into the CW series, Tigelaar wrote a story informed by real-life experience.
