Weird Wednesday: Manly Maid Cafes

March 3rd, 2010 · 2 Comments · Culture, Weird Wednesday

I’m sure you have, in one way or the other, have heard about Japanese theme cafes. As the name suggests, these are your regular cafes that have a theme that is part of the establishment’s appeal.

Among the most popular theme cafes in Japan is what you’d call the “Maid Cafe.” Here, pretty young women wear the typical French maid uniform and address their customers as “master” (goshujinsama) or “mistress” (oj?sama).

There is also the “Butler Cafe,” where instead of maids, customers are attended to by butlers.

Other variations of themed cafes are “Cosplay Cafes,” where the attendants dress up as characters from popular anime shows. Not only do they look like them, they also act like them. It’s like meeting an anime character in real life!

But what probably is the oddest thing of all is the maid cafe where the attendants look like pretty young women, but are actually men. No kidding. These young men dress up and act like your typical maid. Perhaps they do it so well that it’s sometimes hard to identify their gender. Whatever the case may be, it seems to be quite a popular theme cafe.

Which of these cafes would you go to if you had the chance?
