What Makes a Great Holiday Update Letter
A holiday update letter is something some people write and send out to the significant people in their lives. It’s a way to bring people up to speed on everything your family has been up to throughout the year, and it’s also a good way to wish loved ones a happy season. Sharing the news and excitement of the year though an update letter can be a nice way to keep in touch with friends and relatives we might not have a chance to catch up with as often as we’d like. However, many people dread reading holiday letters and don’t appreciate receiving them as much as we’d hope they would. To help with this, here are some suggestions that you can follow in order to make a great holiday update letter that people will actually want to read:
1. Plan on what to write. Before anything else, it is vital that you compose a letter in your head first. This way, you can organize and express thoughts in a clear manner.
2. Make it brief. It’s overwhelming when you receive a letter longer than it should really be! If you make it too long, there’s a possibility that the recipient won’t even read it. Stick to major points and keep it under a page if you can. And of course, try not to brag too much about Susie’s straight-As or Billy’s role as captain of the football team…. It’s great to highlight the accomplishments of everyone in the family, but if the tone of the letter is one of incomparable perfection across the board, it can come across as snooty and unpleasant.
3. Be Creative. Instead of the usual formal block style of writing, try something new. Going with the high-tech approach allows you to have more choices with your presentation. Cook up something that will stand out, like cool fonts and cute decorations. Just be sure it’s readable! Some fonts are difficult to read, especially for those with vision impairments.
4. Attach a photo. Last but not least, make sure you enclose a picture of you and your family enjoying the holidays. You can even do a mini-album or photo montage with captions on the side or bottom of the images. Most people enjoy seeing for themselves how much the kids have grown or what your new hairstyle looks like!
