We received this rice cooker as a wedding gift, and have been using it almost daily for over a year without much issue.
We use it mostly to make brown or wild rice, though we have used it to make buckwheat/kasha and also steel cut oats with fresh berries.
Good basic design, though I’m not sure that I’d pay full price. However, it seems to go on sale often, which makes it a good value.
Pros:
-Super easy to use.
-Doesn’t take up a lot of counter space.
-Reasonable price point for a tidy rice maker.
-Keeps rice warm as promised.
-Cooks brown rice quickly (about 30 minutes for 1 or 2 cups of uncooked rice).
-Generous capacity for small household that eats rice daily.
-Has a water catch–no mess! Love it!
-Has paddle attachment
-Easy cleanup
Cons:
-No “fuzzy logic”, which leads to:
-Inconsistency — Different rices will require different liquid quantities. You’ll need to experiment with the rice:liquid ratio to get it the way you like it. For brown or darker rices, we’ve had best luck with 1 part rice: 2 parts water (or broth), plus 1T olive oil and salt/pepper. Comes out a good consistency, even though we don’t soak the rice in advance. (Who has time for that?) For starchier/whiter rices, 1:1 usually works. Tip: If your rice is undercooked the first time around, just add some more liquid and set it to cook a second time; it usually finishes cooking correctly within 15 minutes.
-Sometimes the bottom of the pan toasts the rice (which depends on the rice and the amount of liquid). Not a big deal to me personally. Best to fluff it with the paddle right after it’s done cooking to avoid further toasting.
-Emits a lot of steam from the top when it cooks. Be sure to keep it away from wood cabinetry during cook time.
Bottom line:
I’d definitely recommend this rice cooker for households of up to four people.
