Mypressi Twist Portable Espresso Maker Overview

The stylish, award-winning mypressi TWIST is a revolutionary hand-held espresso maker that will change how, and where, you enjoy delicious coffee and espresso-based beverages. Voted best new consumer product of 2009/2010 by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA)-the world’s largest association of coffee professionals—the TWST is truly portable and incredibly easy to use, yet makes delicious, smooth espresso time after time. Producing single or double shots from either fresh-ground coffee or ESE pods, the TWIST requires no external power. Just put in the pod or ground coffee, pour in some hot water and pull the trigger. Seconds later you will have a perfect espresso extraction: no lever, no dials, no power cords, and no complex set up. The TWIST is also easy to clean without requiring special tablets or complex cleaning procedures. Just give it a quick rinse when you’re done. Espresso requires high pressure to make a perfect shot. The TWIST’s extraordinary espresso engine uses the same 100% recyclable and affordable 8g pressure cartridges that have been safely used in whipped cream dispensers and soda makers around the world for over 80 years. Each cartridge has sufficient pressure to make up to four double shots and eight single shots of espresso. The TWIST’s patent-pending technology regulates the cartridge to provide the perfect amount of pressure required to make delicious shots of espresso time after time. The result is a perfectly smooth espresso extraction with a clean and clear taste that has enthused coffee lovers around the world. The New York Times called the espresso “sophisticated and balanced” and “delicious”. The TWIST also easily creates the espresso base for a delicious range of drinks and desserts from cappuccinos, mochas and lattes to affogatos, frozen coffee drinks, espresso martinis and more. It is the must-have espresso maker for those seeking truly delicious espresso, anytime, anyplace.

Supposedly one can have it good, have it fast, and have it cheap – pick any two. However, I think we may have an exception on our hands with the Mypressi Twist. I’ve had my eye on this since it was initially announced a while back, and finally splurged and got it as a birthday present for myself :)

A couple minor quibbles aside, the build quality on this thing is phenomenal. Heavy chrome plated copper makes up the majority of the construction, just like on a nice espresso machine. All of the pieces exude quality and fit together very well, except for the cap that hold the nitrous cartridge in (the metal parts don’t quite line up when screwed all the way on) and the lower hemisphere (it’s made entirely of plastic, except for the spout, and fits a bit loosely). I don’t ever use the lower part anyway, so it’s not that big a deal. Mypressi includes a spare set of o rings, a few baskets to choose from, and 4 nitrous cartridges to get your espresso on right away.

I use it primarily in class, with a hot pot to boil the water, and Lavazza Gran Crema espresso pods (as per suggestions in other reviews). I can make a very decent shot of espresso in about 3 minutes, start to finish. It seriously makes some of the best short americanos I’ve ever had (equal parts hot water and espresso).

One thing I noted, it definitely benefits from using water as hot as you can get it. Just today I used my microwave to heat the water past the boiling point, and I got a little better results than I usually get with the hot pot. This dorm rat is now happy, caffeinated, and not paying the coffee shop for mediocre coffee :)

I have a 6 cup moka express and a Brikka, they are both excellent but the Brikka produces a lot of crema which is the main reason I bought it after buying the Moka express.

The moka express is still working fine after 6 months of use, no leakages ..nothing, but the Brikka started leaking after only three months of use, I guess it’s because of the high pressure it produces, so it was time for a gasket change.

I searched AMAZON for a Brikka gasket but couldn’t find any, this was the closest I found, I swapped my Mokas gasket with the Brikkas and it worked fine, so I ordered this and it was a perfect fit, you just need to keep it tightly closed for a while so that the gasket takes the shape of the coffee filter. Now your set for great espresso.

@===> Alessi 9090/6 FM Stovetop Espresso Coffee Maker Magnetic Base 6 Cup

by - October 7th, 2010

Alessi 9090/6 FM Stovetop Espresso Coffee Maker Magnetic Base 6 Cup Overview

Six-cup espresso coffee maker, in 18/10 stainless steel with cast iron handle and magnetic stainless steel bottom. The 9090 isn’t just the first espresso coffee maker in Alessi’s history: it was also Alessi’s first object for the kitchen after the 1930s, the first of Alessi’s many Compasso d’Oro awards (1979), Alessi’s first object to be inducted into the Permanent Design Collection at the New York MOMA, and of course it’s the best-loved Alessi coffee maker bar none, as well as Alessi’s first “amphibious object”, i.e. it is for kitchen use, but with its high design quality it can also be brought directly to the table.

12 years ago I went to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time. It lasts two weeks…way too long when your “job” is basically to attend every party thrown. Somewhere in the middle of it I met a gorgeous German journalist. We ended up in London afterwards for a few more sodden days. When she came to visit me in L.A., she brought this Alessi 6-cup Stainless Steel Espresso maker as a gift. The relationship didn’t last but ever since then, from L.A. to New York and back to L.A.; on open fires while camping; on snowboarding trips and aboard sailboats, I have made two pots of coffee a day and can’t imagine life without it. Somewhere around 4 or 5 thousand pots and 7 years later, the lower half developed hairline cracks that allowed the water to leak out. Alessi replaced it for free.

The coffee is great but if you are looking for thick, strong espresso with the foam on top, this isn’t it. It’s more like strong coffee, which is perfect because the “6 cups” of espresso fills up one large mug and that’s what I drink. It tastes delicious but is very much its own thing. Guests love it.

I like well-made machines and this is a coffee machine. The handle snaps down with an incredibly satisfying feel. The metal is thick and lustrous. Here’s something great: because the whole pot heats up on the stove, the coffee inside will stay hot for an hour. Make sure you use a pot holder to grab the handle, though.

Here’s one thing I can guarantee: from time to time you will forget the pot cooking on the stove until the smell of scorched coffee grounds reminds you. You will rush back to find the lower half blue with heat and bone dry, with the coffee burnt and boiling in the top half. At this point, don’t do anything. Leave the whole thing on the stove to cool and take it apart only then. Pouring out the coffee and running cold water on it will cause the metal to weaken and leave you with the cracks mentioned above. Metal doesn’t mind heat and would rather cool gradually.

Over time, the lower half will lose its brand new look but that’s true of all of us I suppose. It you don’t use abrasives on the top half it will remain new-looking forever. After a few years you may want to replace the rubber ring that seals the two halves.

Buy this espresso maker. You will not be sorry. Or buy it for a friend whom you want to remember you every time he makes coffee…for years.

@===> 6 Cup Espresso Stovetop Coffeemaker in Polished Alluminum

by - October 4th, 2010

6 Cup Espresso Stovetop Coffeemaker in Polished Alluminum Overview

COF6000 With the invention of the stovetop espresso coffee maker, espresso – long a staple of Italian caf s and bars – became available for home consumption. As the cold water in the lower chamber heats, the pressure from its boiling forces the water up through the coffee grounds. In just a few minutes, espresso emerges from the spout into the upper chamber as the pot hisses and gurgles. Remove the pot from the heat and let it stand until the lower chamber is releasing only steam. The lower water tank holds a metal filter and features a safety valve. The upper tank fills with perfectly brewed coffee. Now Italy’s favorite aluminum coffeemaker can go to work in your kitchen, making delicious espresso on gas or electric stovetops. Now available in a mirror finished aluminum. Features: -Coffeemaker. -Mirror polished aluminum. -Sizes based on 1.5 ounce ”cups” . After melting the gasket due to making coffee without water (yeah you can laugh) I was upset about the loss of my beloved moka pot. When someone told me I could buy a new pot on Amazon I was amazed to see that I could purchase a new gasket as well. My only advice would be to measure, measure, measure. I bought the wrong size from a local store because they only had the one size. At least Amazon had all the parts necessary.

@===> Alessi 9090/1 Stovetop Espresso Coffee Maker 1 Cup

by - September 29th, 2010

Alessi 9090/1 Stovetop Espresso Coffee Maker 1 Cup Overview

The 9090 was not only the first espresso coffee machine in our history, but it was also the first Alessi object designed for the kitchen after the 30s. It also gained us our first Compasso d’Oro Award (in 1979) and it is on display in the Permanent Design Collection at the MOMA in New York. The 9090 was the first of our amphibious objects, those that can be used in the kitchen but are attractive enough to be used directly at the table. It proved that there was ample space on the market for good-looking coffee machines, and it spurred on almost all household goods manufacturers to try to imitate our lead. Along with Rossi’s 9095, even after twenty years it remains one of our most popular coffee machines.
