“There is no time like the present!” This challenging economy warrants a fresh, new look on how we treat our employees. It is all too easy to say “Cant afford to do that right now”… or “We’ll consider implementing that when we’re (more) profitable.” However, employers need to consider whether they will have the equipped, motivated, productive staff to handle business growth as it happens. It’s not a matter of “if” — it’s a matter of WHEN! It will cost you more to hire the right staff under pressure and train them in a compressed time frame when the business is there. Why not get an early start and be ahead of your competition?

The simplest of things can create a positive work environment that will have minimal cost and BIG gain! For example, “catching people doing things right”, as Ken Blanchard referenced in his book, “One Minute Manager”, goes a long way to let employees know you appreciate their contributions to the business. “Management by Walking Around” is an old concept with current state impact. By simply saying, “Great work on that ____ project (or problem). I like how you took care of the customer by ______” (and making sure you are as specific as possible about what they did), you are telling your employees you notice what they are doing. Employees are still motivated by ”thank you — job well done”! Just apply the ”KISS” principle and you’ll be amazed at how they will respond!!

Yes, pizza parties and certificates are nice, but it’s that personal touch that goes the farthest to show your appreciation. A good paycheck is obviously important but that can often be negated by a boss with a bad attitude . I once worked in a toxic environment where my boss did not respect me as a strategic thinker and it was extremely de-motivating. My pay was good but I dreaded the time in the office because she did not value my ideas and contributions — ones that were intended to improve the work environment and support the business strategy the way the job had been described to me when I was hired.

Consider what you can do to say “thank you” in a meaningful, personal way. What are you doing to appreciate and motivate your employees? I’d love to have you share your experiences!!

ICE officials also said the audit is just a “first step,” so employers probably can expect more audits and inspections.
