SEO Tip of the Day – website or web pages?

Search Engines don’t rank websites, they rank web pages. There is no overall organic rank for a website.  Each page in a website is scored individually and listed in search engines in order of merit compared to pages in other websites with similar core content.

The same is true for Google’s Page Rank (a measure of web page popularity) which is factored into organic rankings. By the way, Page Rank is a play on words as the term is named after Larry Page, a founder of Google.

So one page on a website could be on page #1 of Google while  another web page in the same website could be on page #100 of Google.  Web page listing position is determined on a page by page basis by algorithms (rules) that rate each page indexed by search engines.

Why does this matter? Because the ‘gold standard’ for search engine benefit to a company is page #1 listings. Search traffic drops dramatically for web pages listed beyond page #1.  Each web page needs to be optimized in a precise manner to have a chance at a coveted page #1 listing.
