Wedding Rings
In most cultures, a wedding ring is traditionally worn on the ring finger. It is believed that this originated from a Roman tradition in which a man gave a ring to the woman at the betrothal ceremony. The wedding ring is worn on the left ring finger because the vein in the left ring finger was believed to be directly connected to the heart. The Christian wedding ceremony of Medieval Europe included placing the ring first on the index finger, then the middle and finally the ring finger of the left hand, where it stayed. This practice was to represent the Holy Trinity — God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. A Greek Orthodox bride wears the ring on her left hand prior to the ceremony, and then moves it to the right hand after the wedding while in England, the 1549 Prayer Book declared “the ring shall be placed on the left hand”. Typically in places like Norway, Russia, Bulgaria, Poland, Austria, Denmark, Latvia and Spain, also in Indian tradition, the wedding ring is worn on the right ring finger. In the Jewish wedding ceremony, the groom places the ring on the bride’s index finger and the ring is then moved to the ring finger after the ceremony.
